3/23/2007 - The wonderful world of cricket

Since last week I have been following the World Cup of Cricket in the West Indies (a group of former British colonies in the Caribbean), and what I have been seeing has exceeded all of my expectations! Murder, surprise results (the two could be connected)... Nothing quite so interesting has ever happened in soccer's version of the World Jamboree.

I don't get to see a lot of the action. I don't have digital TV, so all I have to go by is an hour early in the morning or late at night on the BBC, but it's good stuff. Dutch TV aren't even involved in any way, as cricket is simply not an item in this country, and with good reason. Our national team have qualified for the tournament, but they are far from competitive. They have beaten Scotland, so they won't go home without a win, but that's it. Many people are saying that us minnows shouldn't have a place in the world cup, and I must agree with them.

On the other hand, it might be the minnows who have played a major part in what sets this tournament apart. Last Saturday for instance, on Saint Patrick's Day, minnows Ireland were pitted against giants Pakistan, and won. The defeat meant Pakistan were out of the tournament, which was a huge shock, and the next morning their English coach, Bob Woolmer, was found unconscious in his hotel room in Jamaica. He was rushed to hospital, where he died.

Of course, criticism had been harsh after Pakistan's double loss (first to the West Indies, before going down to the Irish), and Pakistan coach is a stressful job as it is, so with a slightly overweight coach well in his fifties, a heart attack is a distinct possibility. It's sad buit life goes on. Then, yesterday night, as I was sitting down to see the Dutch thrash the Scots (too bad Scotland batted first, otherwise we could have won with a difference of over 100 runs), the news was announced that Bob Woolmer had died as a result of manual strangulation. In other words, he was murdered.

Of course, I too am shocked by this news, but it also amuses me. I will be following the tournament a lot more closely now, as well as all the events that surround it. Boy, this would make for a good movie some day...

If anybody is wondering what it is about cricket that appeals to me, well... it isn't so much the game, let's be honest. It's mostly the countries where the game is played at the highest level, such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, etc. These are countries that you otherwise rarely hear from in the wonderful world of sports. I must say however, that had they still all been playing in white uniforms I would never have watched.
