Well I do not know what the new doctrines of the Pope are, but I will give my opinion anyway. To me it seems that they both ought to just stay together upon the island, becasue if the are Catholics, they should not be afried to die anyway, to ascaned to heaven is suppose to be a good thing for them, so they should stay together instead of one leaving the other to die alone and saving himself. 
Yep, they have to stay on the island and pray for rescue, or a safe passage into the afterlife. They can't decide that one of them is going to stay behind and die, because that would be suicide and that's strictly forbidden. They can only stay behind together and leave their destiny in the hands of God. That for some reason is not considered suicide. The Catholic church does not condone sacrifice in this matter.
