I sometimes listen to the American Forces Radio Network, because I like to know what's going on in the world of American sports. Some are lousy to watch on TV (football, hockey), so the radio is a good alternative. Of course, American radio sports coverage is infested with commercials, and (thank God) European law doesn't allow AFN to broadcast those. Besides if they did, they would have to pay much more for the broadcast rights. AFN has come up with an alternative in public service announcements, tips for healthy living, tiny items on American history, the English language, and much more. Some of these items are regular pieces of artwork, while others are merely functional. Same as regular commercials.

There is one such soundbite that is downright hysterical. It's one of those little pieces of information for American military families on public swimming pool outings. A voice tells that unlike in the US, many swimming pools in Europe are not watched over by lifeguards, and that parents are expected to take responsibility for the lives of their children themselves. It's mostly the way he says it. Of course SilverWind keeps making this point that many Americans refuse to take responsibility for their own actions, but I never realized it's this bad. Is it really that much of a problem for American parents to keep an eye on their own children as they venture out into the deep end of the swimming pool? Also, another aspect about how the voice says all this, is the fact that I almost expect him to say next, that the lack of lifeguards is an Al Qaeda conspiracy to kill the children of US military personnel, hehe. He doesn't but the tone of voice does suggest it .

It isn't even that bad. If you go to a public swimming pool in Europe where you pay an entrance fee, there will be lifeguards. In fact, children who get a swimming diploma in the Netherlands, also get a badge they have to have stitched to their swimming suit/trunks. I've been to quite a few pools in my life where children who look younger than twelve without such badges are refused access to pools that are (partly) deeper than 3 ft. Some European lifeguards do take responsibility.

That is pretty funny and it really would not surprsie me all that much if they did think it was a conspiracy agaist them from Terroisits.
