Yes, the Netherlands have made international headlines again. Tonight on a show on public TV a woman with an incurable disease is giving away one of her kidneys to one of three contestants. I don't know many of the details, but apparently the viewers get to choose with the help of text messages. I have been jogging my mind to come up with an opinion about this, but I don't seem to have one. Oh well, that's where you come in.

In any event, foreign media, foreign governments, OUR government, as well as the European Commission have expressed shock and outrage at this latest quirk from a nation noted mostly for its liberal drug, and mercy killing policies. What right does a Broadcasting Corporation, BNN in this case, have to play God in this manner, and choose who among three contestants is to get a kidney and live, while the other contestants are likely to die, before a donor kidney becomes available to them, eh?

In defense of their show, BNN have said that they simply wish to make a statement to the Dutch people, because on average, people have to wait four years for a kidney or any other organ, and most of them die waiting. Being on a list, knowing that your chances of getting the organ you need are very slim, they reason, is not much different from being on a show with two more contestants, knowing only one of you will win.

Even if the contest indeed takes place, over which there are still doubts, it's very uncertain that a doctor is found who will actually transplant the kidney. Virtually every surgeon who could do the operation in this country has expressed dismay about these events.

My personal opinion about organ transplants is that I'm against it. I don't like doctors to play God this way. However, I am flexible about this. I will never accept a donor organ to save my own life, but I have a donor card on which I have selected many organs that may be used to save someone else. I'm an atheist, so I'm not worried about getting to Heaven in one piece.

I heard about this show on a radio program I listen to. It is kind of funny becasue before that I was just joking with a friend of mine about reality shows in the US and how pretty soon like everyone will be decdied by a game show where America Votes, and then I heard about this show.

It might be in poor taste but overall I am not against the show, as I presume that all the contenstants are willing participants, and if they want to do this, then that is thier choice to do so.

The only time I would ever consider dontating anything, or giving blood is if I knew it was going to save someone who was close to me that needed it.
