People just aren't social enough, are they? Whether you walk thru a crowd on the street, walk past someone in the frozen dinners aisle, or sit next to a stranger on the plane... It's hard for these strangers to even utter a 'good morning', or a 'hello'. A Dutch poll showed that 63 percent of our population feel that random strangers they meet have to greet them.
A Belgian organization, Boodschap Zonder Naam (message without a name) think they have the solution. This week from Monday thru Friday, their 'agents' will be randomly walking around, and anyone who says 'good afternoon' to them will receive 25 euros. In fact, there are two 25,000 euro grand prizes for the persons who say it in the most polite way: one winner in Dutch-speaking Flanders, and one winner in French-speaking Wallonia.
I don't see the point. If I had to greet everyone I passed on the street it would take me at least fifteen minutes longer to get to each place I go to every day. Also, I can't walk into a grocery store without being greeted by the manager. Sometimes in the public transport system people take liberties that just drive me mad. I think people are social enough as it is.
I'm afraid that if I start talking to someone I don't know, they'll tell me to shut up or worse. I see your point though. The lady from school who is supposed to drop off forms to a box on my porch ends up ringing the bell 20 times (I hide) and later said, "I was looking through your windows--did you get a new dog?" Totally creeps me out. I bet Silver Wind will have something to say ;l
If a stranger out in public talks to me I automacialy assume they must be crazy and werid, becasue why else would this person I do not know be talking to me unless something was wrong with them. And than I am forced to engange with them, becasue if someone starts talking to you what else are you suppose to do, stare at them blankly like a retard. So really if poeple do not speak to me, they are doing me a favor, by not forcing me to than respond to them.
Luckily when I fly it is usually only to LA to visit my sister, which from North Cal to South Cal, it is really just a comuter plane with mostly only business people on it, so they don't want to talk anymore than I do, becasue they are busy with work and on thier lap tops. And I do everything I can to aviod human contact on planes, I always sit close to the window and just keep my gaze out the window so not to make eye contact with anyone, and to look unapporcable.
Usually if I am out walkiig and happen to just catch someones eye who is passing me, I will just give a head nod but most the time when I am walking I am jaming to my ipod anyway.
I think it's funny because she's so friendly and generous with her comments on this site! I get the feeling that if Silverwind and I met on the street we would hate each other. Perhaps being on the internet lets people find what they have in common whereas in person, it might be too easy to classify them without really knowing them.
LOL, yes I know the way I am online often seems contridictory to my typical nature. But I do have more control online over my interaction, I can pick and choose what conversations look interesting to me, and well I don't have to deal with people in person online and if I do not want to talk about something online it is easier to just ignore it.
Though in person, I am surprinsgly not as mean as one might be inclined to think. At least not typically.
Same here. From what (I think) I know about the people I interact with online, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be friends with 98% of them if I knew them in person.

You are Sandusky, OH
Loser! You are boring, have no sense of adventure, no sense of humor, you have no friends, in fact you're no good to this world. You are definitely Sandusky, OH!
Famous Sandusky, Ohio, residents: probably a few hockey players, but no one worth a second glance
