Stress is an ever-present element of life. Every individual has his own share of stress and stressors--young and old, male and female, rich and poor. There is not one globally approved definition of stress, but I would like to use Merriam-Webster's definition: "Stress is understood to be, "A confining force or influence as a physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be a factor in disease causation." Indeed, stress affects our entire being, not only physically but also our minds and emotions.
Stress, when not managed rightly can cause a wide array of illnesses and conditions-- lifestyle and chronic diseases, mental health conditions and as well as emotional problems. So to help you effectively manage the stress levels in your life, here are some practical tips you can follow.
1. To start, you need to accept the situation that you are presently in. Recognize the presence of stress in your life. This seems simple, but many stress conditions proliferate because we keep denying the fact that we are stressed. Only when you are able to say "I am really stressed" will you be able to take a step towards finding a solution for your stress problem.
2. Avoid unnecessary stress. Not all stress can be avoided, and it's not healthy to avoid a situation that needs to be addressed. But if you evaluate things carefully, you will see that a lot of the stress in your life can be avoided or even removed-- like for example stress from having to deal with people you don't like or stress from the workplace. If someone particularly causing stress in your life, you can decrease your stress by limiting the amount of time you spend with this particular person or avoid him or her entirely-- it's that simple. In terms of work, know your limits and stick to them. Refuse to accept more assignments than you can handle.
3. Always have a positive attitude. A person's general well-being is great affected by his or her attitude in life. Never let stress change your attitude. Being positive doesn't mean ignoring life's unpleasant situations. Positive thinking just means that you approach the unpleasantness in a more positive and productive way. When facing major challenges, try to look at them as opportunities for personal growth. Learn from each mistake and benchmark every success.
4. Engage in regular exercise. Exercise plays a key role in reducing and preventing the effects of stress . It serves as a diversion from the things that are causing you to feel stressed out and also serves as a channel for tension and other negative stress-related emotions.
5. Have enough sleeping time. Sleep powers both body and mind. Without enough rest and sleep, fatigue will get the best of you and your stress levels will rise as you won't be effective in facing the challenges in life. So give your body the right amount of sleep. In fact, it would be great if you can extend your sleep every now and then.
