Twitter is back up and running - Posted at 7:13 AM on 8/31/2013 by JournalHome.com in Unspecified

After a long, long, long delay I have finally re-enabled twitter login. I am still having some issues but I am working hard to iron them out.

For the technically minded amongst us, Twitter has moved to a new version of their API sometime ago, I am the one to blame for not moving to the new version sooner. Thankfully the changes were minimal, (they only moved from 1.0 to 1.1).

Please let me know if you find any issues, (but I am still working on the one or two problems already reported).

Added instagram shortcode - Posted at 6:38 AM on 2/3/2013 by JournalHome.com in shortcodes

When you find an image on instagram.com copy the url of the image and you can now add it in your own posts, simply type:

[instagram url=http://instagr.am/p/Ma3ji4OP2d/ size=large] or simply [instagram:http://instagr.am/p/Ma3ji4OP2d/], (you can also use the longer instagram.com url as well if that tickles your fancy).

[instagram:http://instagr.am/p/Ma3ji4OP2d/ size=small] [instagram:http://instagr.am/p/NGnxY2OPyR size=small]

The sizes available are , 'small', 'medium' or 'large', the default value is 'medium'.

Images are automatically linked, but you can add "linkback='false'" if you want to remove the link back.

Cosmetic changes - Posted at 5:49 AM on 1/12/2013 by JournalHome.com in Unspecified

I made some small cosmetic changes to your manager section, the 'comments', 'pings' and the 'social' settings, (although I am tempted to move the social settings to its own plugin as this is really what it is...).

Also some of you that want to create a new weblog, (and if you are allowed to Smile), it is now easier and does not throw a bunch of errors as it used to Embarassed.

As usual, I am slowly making my way through some of the cosmetic issues. I have a tentative deadline of June where I want it all done and I want to re-launch the site and there is still a lot of work to do.

If you see anything that is out of place, or you think I need to pay more attention to it, give me a shout...

Moved to a new server - Posted at 6:18 PM on 11/28/2012 by JournalHome.com in Unspecified

I made the decision to move to a new server this week, the old one was just too small, (by small I mean not enough memory!).

I could have spent some time trying to optimise the scripts and database but at the rate we are growing I was fighting a loosing battle. I also think there was something seriously wrong with the old server, but my host was not very helpful in that matter.

The down side of it all is the monthly cost of such a server, currently this is coming straight out of my pocket and it will not be long before it start hurting the pocket :). I don't mind doing it a bit longer, I enjoy the work, it is fun... but expensive.

I am looking for a template developer to re-design the site, (this one is 7 years old already!), this will probably cost a lot of money, but with a bit of luck I will find someone who can do it for free. I might even throw in some free advertising or something.
I think with the right design we will get a lot of new blogers.

I also need to design a new 'mobile' site as more and more of our visitors are mobile users.

Automatically close comments after ... days - Posted at 9:06 AM on 11/8/2012 by JournalHome.com in Changelog

Hi,

I added a new option to close comments after a certain amount of days.

Comment options.

Go to your weblog and select > Comment settings, toward the bottom you can now select to close your comments after xyz days.

Because of the number of blogs we currently have I had to choose a default behavior, so now all comments will close after 14 days of been published.

You can of course change those settings.

Let me know if you have any issues.

Thanks

New update happening - Posted at 6:05 PM on 11/3/2012 by JournalHome.com in Unspecified

Hi all,

I just did a major update, (version 3.38 if you must know). It gets rid of the last of the 'bad' code that was left behind from the original developers.
It has been quite an uphill battle to keep the site up and running while getting rid of all that legacy code.

I can now proceed with the 'look' of the site. I have 3 major projects and 1 ongoing one, that I can now concentrate on

  1. Create a new template for this site, the current look of the site is 7 years old. It has to go.
  2. Create a 'mobile' template for mobile visitors.
  3. Add new templates, (I still want to use the hundreds of free-to-use that are lying around).
  4. Add more features to the current blogs.

Unfortunately #3 is probably take the longest to implement.

I'll spend the week-end pouring over the logs to see any errors reported, but if you see something wrong, just drop me a note and I will update it asap.

Database issues/down [resolved] - Posted at 5:56 AM on 10/20/2012 by JournalHome.com in Status

Hi,

Yesterday we had a small issue with the database, (the cached data to be exact).

This caused the site to missbehave for over an hour as it could not cache any data, but this has now been resolved. For about an hour after that, while the cache was been rebuilt, the site was running a bit slow.

All should be back to normal, but please let me know if you can still see an issue.

Sorry about that,

FFMG

New 'Contact-us' page. - Posted at 5:25 AM on 4/14/2012 by JournalHome.com in Changelog

The other day some spammer sent me an an email complaining that his/her account was blocked and that there was no way of 'appealing' the block, in fact he complained that there was no contact page at all.

I have to admit, I am embarrassed to say, never even though of it, users have been able to contact me via messaging, but this is not possible to contact us if your account is blocked, or even if you are just wanting to ask a question.

So you can now contact-us directly if you have any queries/questions and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Added GeSHi - Generic Syntax Highlighter - Posted at 9:40 PM on 2/9/2012 by JournalHome.com in Unspecified

I added a new shortcode tag using GeSHi

You can now use the shortcode [code:lang] or [code language='lang']

For example you can use the SQL language, ([code:sql])

  1. --
  2. -- SQL example for GeSHi
  3. --
  4.
  5. DROP TABLE IF EXISTS foo;
  6. CREATE TABLE foo (
  7. id INT(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
  8. characters INT(11) DEFAULT '0',
  9. time_taken DOUBLE DEFAULT NULL,
  10. language_used VARCHAR(100) DEFAULT NULL,
  11. SOURCE text,
  12. time_highlighted datetime DEFAULT NULL,
  13. PRIMARY KEY (id)
  14. ) TYPE=MyISAM

There is a comprehensive list of languages available, but most of the basic languages are included.

If you have a secure Facebook account, (I think it is a requirement now?), you can now login to facebook, (or even create a new account using Facebook).

This is the secure site, https://www.journalhome.com/, over time I will update all the links, (internal of course), to be 100% secure, I just want to make sure that everything runs fine for a while.

Visit us on our Facebook page.

Updated Daffi template - Posted at 7:23 PM on 1/24/2012 by JournalHome.com in Unspecified

Daffi template I finnally fixed the Daffi template, it was very outdated and, to be fair, completely broken.

It is now a bit wider and allows for most/all plugins to be entered.

Click on the image to see what it looks like.

I am still, (yes still!), working at converting some wordpress themes, this is taking a lot longer than expected, but at least the work is slowly progressing.

Let me know of you have any other templates you want me to look at.

Supporting anti-SOPA Blackout day - Posted at 7:55 PM on 1/18/2012 by JournalHome.com in Unspecified

On the Tuesday 24th January 2012, the US Senate will vote on the Internet censorship bill.

Whilst it is an American law, it has far reaching repercussions for the web as a whole.

The bill will affect us all, and the way we all use websites.

The $5.00 mistake - Posted at 12:03 PM on 12/16/2011 by JournalHome.com in General

I am in the process of making various updates and, although I am trying to be as careful as possible, some errors crept in.

Last night, (UK time), users were unable to create new entries for about 4-5 hours, the editor was just not working properly anymore :(. I fixed the issue as quickly as I could.

Sorry about this, please let me know if you come across any other issues that I might have missed.

In case you are wondering about the title, I had to put about $5.00 in the swear jar last night...

Where did my comments go? - Posted at 7:43 AM on 12/12/2011 by JournalHome.com in Unspecified

We often get some questions about 'disappearing' comments.

What happens is no big secret, but rather a sign that we are not relying on technology as much as people think we are. You see, we have a spam bot running in the background, constantly evaluating entries, weblogs, and comments, (and a few other things). While it catches most spam on the spot, sometime it goes into 'safe mode' and asks for the comment to be moderated rather than risking making a bad decision.

While this is happening, a notification is sent to you, informing you that there is a new comment on your blog. Been the super efficient bunch that we are, we often review comments very quickly and delete it if need be.

This means that, by the time you come to read your blog, you find nothing more than tumbleweeds.

Note that we don't judge any comments, we only remove spam comments, nothing more, nothing less any other form of comments will have to be moderated by yourself. You can go to your account and delete the comments you don't wish to see.

Also note  that a copy of the comment is sent to you, if you feel that we were wrong, we will happily restore your comment...

Network update - Posted at 9:56 AM on 10/18/2011 by JournalHome.com in Unspecified

There were some issues with the network this morning but it seems to have resolved itself, (somewhat worrying when those problems come and go).

At one point it looked like the Yahoo search engine robot had gone a bit crazy and was flooding the site, but I am not entirely certain that this was the issue.

I will keep monitoring it to see what the issue might be.

Sorry if you experienced some down time ...

[update 20/10/2011] I am still having some issues, I have disabled the statistics for now, so they will be a bit skew for a day or two ....
