5/31/2005 - New Thinking

A presumption against this arbitrary assumption that we have the one and

only desirable code is suggested the unthinking acceptance of the

traditional by those who are lacking in enlightenment and in the capacity

reflection. Is it not significant that a contact with new ways of

thinking has a tendency, at least, to make men broaden their horizon and

to revise some of their views?

5/27/2005 - Environment

If man's nature can be revealed only through the development of his

capacities, it is futile to seek it in a return to undeveloped man. The

nature of the chicken is not best revealed in the egg. And, as man can

develop only in interaction with his environment, we must, to understand

him, study his environment also.

5/13/2005 - Parents and Children

Childhood is a stage in the process of that continual remanufacture of

the Life Stuff by which the human race is perpetuated.  The Life Force

either will not or cannot achieve immortality except in very low

organisms:  indeed it is by no means ascertained that even the amoeba

is immortal.  Human beings visibly wear out, though they last longer

than their friends the dogs.  Turtles, parrots, and elephants are

believed to be capable of outliving the memory of the oldest human

inhabitant.  But the fact that new ones are born conclusively proves

that they are not immortal.  Do away with death and you do away with

the need for birth:  in fact if you went on breeding, you would

finally have to kill old people to make room for young ones.

If you are a fair-minded man or woman, and have had much experience
with young children, you will be compelled to confess that they
generally have a tolerably clear sense of right and wrong, needing
only gentle guidance to choose the right when it is put before them.-Do you agree with me on this?
