Several years ago a preacher moved to Houston, Texas.
Some weeks after he arrived, he had occasion to ride the bus from his home to the downtown area.
When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change.
As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, "You better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it."
Then he thought, "Oh, forget it, it's only a quarter. Who would worry about this little amount? Anyway the Bus Company already gets too much fare; they will never miss it. Accept it as a gift from God and keep quiet."
When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, and then he handed the quarter to the driver and said, "Here, you gave me too much change."
The driver with a smile replied: "Aren't you the new preacher in town? I have been thinking lately about going to worship somewhere. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change."
When the preacher stepped off the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest light pole, and held on, and said, "O God, I almost sold your Son for a quarter."
We must be careful how we live our lives; we may be the only Bible some people will ever read.
Author Unknown, but appreciated
I have no authority of the validity of this story, whether it is true or not. In the vein of transparency let me share this...
The place was 147th street and the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, New York City. A place I was very familiar with, due to many, many years of smoking crack. In the basement of a house on that block of NYC, as I took a hit of the pipe, a woman who I knew only by association came to me, stood in my face, and said a very profound thing. I never forgot what she said, but I had wondered many times about the time and place. What she said was, "Be careful how you live your life, you may be the only Bible someone else reads." What I realize now, many years later, is that The Holy Spirit tried to draw me towards the kingdom but I did not listen nor understand.
As this journey continues toward a new hope in Christ the challenge remains the same...
Be careful how you live your life, you may be the only Bible someone else reads...
Let us journey on... in truth... in hope... in love... towards heaven... p.h.
