Grace And Peace

Friday, May 20, 2005 - Addendum to 'Jonah and the Whale'...

Posted in Unspecified

A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales. The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small.

The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale.

Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible.

The little girl said, "When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah."

The teacher asked, "What if Jonah went to hell?"

The little girl replied, "Then you ask him."

Let us journey on... with a little laughter...

 Friday, May 20, 2005 - glad you're here

I don't always agree with your remarks since I am much more of a skeptic but I'm glad you're here.

I had a blog at blogger.com and some at other blogging sites but none of these places were as good as the journalhome site. None of them were as pretty nor did they work as well. The bad thing about this place is that it seems to be full of teens and school kids and all their angst, so I'm thrilled when I read your blog and I can know that there are other adults here. I only wish a lot more would discover this place.

Regarding the joke about Jonah being in heaven or hell I think the point is that when one is talking about the Bible then one should suspend disbelief because the Bible is about miracles and God and He can do anything He pleases.

On the other hand it is entirely appropriate for a teacher to demand logic and reason and facts regarding whether or not a whale could swallow a human. Your joke belittles and demonizes teachers by sitting them up as straw men and then knocking them down. Not a good Christian thing to do even in jest.

I have seen some whales that could swallow people but I doubt that the person could sit around inside the whale and deliberate about things or decide to repent his sins and cry out to God. I also doubt that someone named Jonah actually had that happen to him.

People are not fools if they question something that doesn't stand up to reason. I don't see why a God would hide Himself and tell people they just had to have faith that He exists. What sense does that make?

There are stories similar to that of Jonah which have been found in the mythology of serveral peoples or tribes. I don't expect you to look at this logically. I expect you to suspend disbelief when discussing myth in history because that is the only way in which you can cling to your dogma.

You have already decided what you believe and no educator can shake your beliefs with logic, reason or fact. Just don't go near any killer whales or you will get a geniune lesson in what whales can do and what happens to people when they do it.
