Alternate power embodies a variety of energy sources which all have one thing in common : they don't seem to be based primarily on normal fuels. Excluding hydroelectric energy and nuclear energy, which are well-established technologically, there are numerous new energy sources at numerous stages of development.

Biofuels, whether or not they are derived from sugar, corn, or cellulosic waste like corn cobs and cornstalks, represent an alternate energy source. Ethanol is a first generation biofuel, but better biofuels with higher energy content are on the horizon and will most likely be prepared for exploitation within the next 3-5 years.

Another example is wind energy, which can often be generated by wind mills hereabouts or large wind turbines set up on hill tops and in the sea. Solar energy is also a type of alternative power, including solar solar generating panels that generate electricity and solar heaters that produce heat simply by targeting the sun's power. Geothermal energy also should be included in the group of alternative energy sources on the rise. Massive potential sources of geothermal energy are available by utilizing heat encircled deep beneath the surface of the earth. Geothermal energy is also widely available to nearly every homeowner on a smaller scale. The constant fifty five degree Fahrenheit temperature of the ground about 4-6 feet deep allows customers to generate heat in winter and cooling in the summertime by burying a system of pipes in the back yard.

Alternative power, without regard for the source, should be developed and encouraged for three important reasons.

one. Developing sources of alternative power decreases our desire to burn normal fuels, reducing carbon emissions.

2. Non-fossil fuel-based sources of energy create energy security, permitting countries to be more self-sufficient in their energy production and less dependent on imported sources of natural gas or petrol that are subject to cartel-controlled pricing from unfriendly or downright hostile trading partners.

3. While supplies of carbon-based fuels continue being adequate at the present time, the amounts aren't unlimited. The supplies of carbon-based fuels are being reduced daily. The cost of petroleum will unavoidably rise, even without unpleasant conglomerations restricting supply to drive up costs. The most ardent fans of petrol must recognize that, at some future time, alternate power sources will be required.

For all these reasons, funds for alternative energy is very much in the national interest. That funding is required now.

Journalist Thomas Friedman appealed to the Congress in one of his up to date essays : "Stop lavishing money on repaving old roads and pinching dimes when it comes to trailblazing new frontiers."

I agree, especially when it comes to the development of choices to carbon-based fuels.
