• 11/10/2013 - How To Heal Cavities Naturally

Posted in Unspecified

A fine example of what is often deemed as an incurable health problem is dental cavities, but extensive research is now becoming more public about the true nature of tooth decay and the fact that there are proven remedies that can remedy it. The lies perpetrated about tooth decay According to the American Dental Association, the reason we have tooth decay is as follows: "[Tooth decay] occurs when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches) such as milk, pop, raisins, cakes or candy are frequently left on the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth thrive on these foods, producing acids as a result. Over a period of time, these acids destroy tooth enamel, resulting in tooth decay." There are a few problems with this theory, including: Groups of indigenous people who had fermentable carbohydrates stuck on their teeth all the time that did not brush or floss were mostly or completely free of tooth decay. Bacteria do not consume processed sugar or flour because of the lack of nutrients in them. Foods that bacteria like to eat, such as milk, vegetables, meat, fish and fruit, are not commonly implicated in causes of tooth decay. So if the modern explanation of tooth decay is not accurate, what is actually the cause of tooth decay? What actually causes tooth decay Tooth decay, as researched by Dr. Weston Price and other dental pioneers, boiled down to three factors: Not enough minerals in the diet. Not enough fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) in the diet. Nutrients not being readily bioavailable, and your intestinal system not properly absorbing them. The presence of phytic acid largely influences this factor. Over a period of time, if your diet lacks vitamins and minerals from a poor diet and/or contains high levels of phytates (from grains, seeds, nuts, and legumes), the blood chemistry and the ratio of calcium and phosphorous become out of balance, which results in minerals being pulled from bones, causing tooth and bone loss. So, the long-standing belief that sugar causes tooth decay is true, but as a result of it depleting nutrients from the body, not because bacteria eat it and produce acid that ruins your teeth. The food remedies that can heal cavities and tooth decay In order to restore the ratio of calcium and phosphorus in our blood, and to enable minerals to bond to our teeth, it is not enough to just avoid eating too many sweet or processed foods. We must also eat health-building foods, containing copious amounts of minerals and vitamins that will build a glassy hard tooth structure. Foods to focus on are: Coconut oil, grass-fed organic dairy (especially butter), grass-fed meats, seafood and bone broths. Organic cooked vegetables (soups with bone broth are ideal). Organ and gland meats, like liver. Limit foods that are high in phytic acid, like grains, beans, nuts and seeds, as well as limiting processed food intake full of processed flours and sugars that upset blood sugar balance. Supplements to consider are: Fermented cod liver oil - very high in fat soluble vitamins A, D and K. Magnesium - required to use calcium and phosphorous effectively. Gelatin - if you don't have time to make bone broth, this is a good alternative and is great for gums and digestion. Now go get your pearly white smile back. Deborah Cavallaro , for instance, a real estate agent from Los Angeles, was enrolled in an individual plan that cost her just $293 per month. Under Obamacare, Cavallaro says shell have to pay over $400 for coverage she doesnt need or want. But a higher premium doesnt tell the whole story: while Cavallaro may spend more each month, shell be buying more comprehensive insurance with fewer out-of-pocket costs, better benefits that will cover more and cost her less if she actually falls ill, and much more robust consumer protections. So before you buy into the sticker shock hysteria, here are four questions you should ask: 1. What does the old plan actually cover? Most of the policies in the existing individual health care market which are currently issuing notices offer low premiums, but also come with skimpy benefits and high out-of-pocket costs. These plans often have low limits for outpatient treatment, hospitalization or dont offer any benefits for procedures like colonoscopy, chemotherapy or mental health treatment. Insurers market these policies to young and healthy people who dont use their coverage and never know the true extent of their benefits. (The market is also fairly mobile, with just 17 percent of individual subscribers purchasing the same plan for two years or longer.) Under the Affordable Care Act, insurers cover 10 essential categories of benefits, offering far more comprehensive coverage than whats available in most individual insurance plans. 2. Did this person go to the exchanges? Insurers informing policy holders that their health care costs will go up, often direct beneficiaries to their other brand products without telling them about competitive options and prices available through the exchanges. Cavallaro, for instance, got a quote from a broker, but did not explore the available options on her own. Prices are lowest in areas with the most insurer competition. An analysis from the McKinsey Center for U.S. Health System Reform found that new entrants into the market make up 26 percent of all insurers, and tend to price their plans lower than the median premiums in their market. The average premium in the exchanges is 16 percent lower than previously projected. 3. Yes, the premium is low, but what are the co-pays and deductibles? This coverage often forces individuals who do use care to meet high deductibles the amount you pay out-of-pocket before your insurance kicks in pay high co-pays and co-insurance or limit the number of doctor visits that are allowed. Cavallaro, for instance, must meet a deductible of $5,000 a year and has an out-of-pocket cap of $8,500 a year. The plan covers just two doctors visits and each include a $40 co-pay. As the LA Times Michael Hiltzik points out in California, Cavallaro could sign-up for a Silver level plan with a $2,000 deductible, maximum out-of-pocket cost of $6,350, pay $45 for a primary care visit and $65 for a specialty visit but all visits would be covered, not just two. The health law sets exchange enrollees maximum annual out-of-pocket costs at $6,350, and silver plans have deductibles ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 . 4. Does this person qualify for subsidies? Americans between 100 and 400 percent of the federal poverty line ($46,000 for an individual, or about $78,000 for a family of three) qualify for tax credits under the law. Six of the 7 million individuals who are expected to sign up for insurance through the exchange will receive an average tax credit of $5,290 per year . Cavallaro qualifies her for a hefty federal premium subsidy, Hiltzik reports and can purchase a silver plan for $333, $40 more than shes paying now. A cheaper bronze plan would be in the $200s. (Courtesy of Erena Shimoda) Follow @anniehauser Scuba diver and photographer Erena Shimoda has always loved traveling the world to dive in some of the globes most exotic locations. In the water, you experience true freedom, she said. She wanted to share this love of the outdoors, water and nature with others. After a devastating car accident killed her father and left her seriously injured, she was really inspired to give back. Enter Underwater Healing , a photographic portrait series that captures cancer survivors underwater to celebrate freedom, movement, self-esteem and self-expression. Shimodavolunteered as part of the American Cancer Society's "Look Good, Feel Better" program to get her project off the ground and into pools across Northern California and the Pacific Northwest. (Shimoda also shoots other underwater portraits, usually of pregnant women .) After the fact, she donated 40 percent of the profits to I Had Cancer . In time for Octobers Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Shimoda has shot eight survivors. She said each persons story inspired her work in a different way. "Everybody has a different experience, but they all have the issues with body image after chemo or other treatments. Theyve lost a part of their body, she said.To overcome that, patients try to be positive, but they never get to do a portrait session or anything like this to celebrate their beauty. One of her favorite sessions to date was two survivors strangers beforehand who were shot together. They were laughing, helping each other, making jokes, she said. They never meet before, but because of their [cancer] experiences, they had a special bond. I was inspired seeing that. Above, all eight of Shimodas subjects share their portraits and their inspiring stories of survival. "To see somebody smile who had no intention of smiling that day, it's just the best." The 67-year-old retiree visits two hospitals, St. Joseph's Cancer Center and the Rose Cancer Center, and most recently, CARE House of Oakland County, a refuge for abused and neglected children. "Someone once asked me why I get them Starbuckswhich is expensiveand I said, 'Where should I go, the gas station?'" Dewey calls the patients and hospital staff he meets "the best people on earth," and thinks they deserve anything they feel like ordering. "If they're having a bad day, I'll twist their arm and make them get one of those 'frou-frou' drinks like a caramel Frappuccino. There are no rules, have two drinks if you want." More on Yahoo: Starbucks' Plea to Customers: Help End the Shutdown! Dewey first got the idea of making free coffee runs when his father was being treated for Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2002. "He had to sit in a big blue chair getting chemotherapy for a couple of hours each time," he says, remembering that difficult period. "My father was from the World War II generation, he didn't need anything, but I was definitely going to need a coffee." During his dad's first treatments, Dewey noticed the long line of other patients also getting chemo, and asked, "Who else wants something?" Five years later, when his father returned to what he calls St. Joe's for prostate cancer treatment, Dewey picked up the routine again, taking orders and buying drinks for any patients and staff who needed a pick-me-up. "After my father recovered from his second bout of cancer, I said [about the coffee runs], 'We had a lot of fun doing them,' and he replied, 'Yeah, go ahead,' and those three words have been keeping me going for seven years." He now visits each location once a week, delivering about 90 orders total, at a cost of between $200 and $250. More on Yahoo: Children's Hospital 'Brave' Video Goes Viral In the beginning, Dewey paid for the drinks out of his own pocket. As a former school district employee who lives on a modest pension, he says he couldn't really afford it, "but I've never had any money anyway, so why not just share what I do have?" In 2011, Valerie Edgington, who was then an employee at Dewey's regular Starbucks, started a Facebook Page to help him get donations, and Dan's Coffee Run was officially born. He's received donations from patients' families as well as from strangers. He says he's especially grateful to two school groups, one from California and another from a school for the visually impaired in Long Island, New York, whose fundraising kept his operation alive over the summer. A couple of weeks ago, he says that funds started "running real thin," and he didn't think he could keep going past Nov. 1. In seven years, he's missed only one deliveryon a Christmas Eve when his sister came to visit. "A few days ago, Valerie told me, 'You have to have faith.'" And now, thanks to a post from a Reddit user, ProfEx , who encountered Dewey making a coffee run when his own father was being treated for multiple myeloma (a blood cancer), the story of Dan's Coffee Run is starting to go viral, in part because of this comment: "I want to thank Dan for the moments of happiness he brought to my parents with a simple cup of coffee during some of the hardest moments of my father's life," he wrote on the social news website on Thursday. More than 730 people commented on the post and the Dan's Coffee Run Facebook page has received an additional 1,000 likes and 150 new donations in the past 24 hours. For more information about how to donate, you can visit the Dan's Coffee Run website or official Facebook page . Also on Shine:

• 9/24/2013 - Natural Health Care: Fiber – For Effective Weight Loss

Posted in Unspecified

But fiber can provide other health benefits as well, such as lowering your risk of diabetes and heart disease and promoting significant weight loss .High fiber diet promotes weight loss through less calorie intake while you eat normal amount of food. Fiber intake ensures that you don't get hungry and tempted to eat foods which are not a part of your diet. So, you stop thinking of eating more all the time as you did before. Fiber foods take a long time to be chewed properly. Though this does not directly contribute to weight loss, the dieter feels as if he/she has eaten a substantial meal than the usual one. Further, it also takes longer time to finish this meal which in turn helps. Intake of fiber foods make a positive contribution towards your health by aiding the food to move expeditiously through your body. How does fiber help in weight loss? One Swiss study determined that consuming a high-fiber meal reduced hunger more than eating a meal lows in fiber. You can find a number of sources for fiber. Fiber makes us feel full sooner and stays in our stomach longer than other substances we eat, slowing down our rate of digestion and keeping us feeling full longer. Due to its greater fiber content, a single serving of whole grain bread can be more filling than two servings of white bread. Fiber also moves fat through our digestive system faster so that less of it is absorbed. Studies show that people who have included fiber into their daily diets have had better weight loss results than those who have dieted without including fiber. List of high fiber foods Grain, Cereal and Pasta Whole-wheat (cooked) Bread (whole wheat or multi-grain) Bran (known to have the highest fiber content. Can be consumed as corn bran, wheat bran, bran flakes) Whole-wheat pastas

• 9/17/2013 - Gluten Free:- Gluten Free Diet Ideas . | Is Ice Cream Gluten Free

Posted in Unspecified

You are here: Home / gluten free / Gluten Free:- Gluten Free Diet Ideas . Gluten Free:- Gluten Free Diet Ideas . May 1, 2012 By admin Leave a Comment If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed . Thanks for visiting! Yuletide particularly a gluten free Xmas takes plenty of planning. There appears to be gluten in everything! 7 systems which have helped me very in arranging a gluten free Xmas for my celiac kid. But occasionally you ponder whether that will be possible! Mince pies, Xmas cakes, selection boxes and advent calendars In Britain, there are good excuses for trying hard to get a diagnosis of celiac illness because many special foods can be had on prescription. In other states, it could be better to just go gluten free on a trial footing, and see whether your symptoms recede. If that is the case eat something with gluten in it as a test. If your symptoms come back, you have nailed it. Why pay money to discover if you should not eat something, when you can just try it and find out for free? Additionally, you've got to eat a normal gluten rich diet for a period of time before the tests if they're to work. The 3rd group gf express foods is controlled by searches for puddings. This tends to suggest a split in focus between folks recently diagnosed and those that are well-off enough to continually search for gluten free eateries and puddings. The highest explicit food searches were for cakes and muffins, while in US English and Australia top explicit searches were for bread. In the Brazil English community there had been an even stronger obsession with gluten free puddings taking up 3 individual search phrases the 1st 2 accounting for 9% of all searches. I typically use canned, and use the liquid from the can as an element of the liquid when making up the jelly. This could sound like children stuff = and its definitely sure to go down nicely with kids but it is surprising how nice it is, and obviously, there isn't any gluten in jelly. Just put your jello mix or cubes into a measuring jug, add the smallest amount of simmering water to melt it, mix well, and when all of the mix has melted, pour in the juice from the can. There'll be some juice still sticking to the fruit, so dont overdo the water! Put the fruit into the jelly mould or bowl and drip over the jelly, then cover and put into the refrigerator to set. You are able to add water to make it to slightly below the correct quantity if you do not have enough juice.

• 9/14/2013 - 5 Penyebab Sakit Akibat Diet | Info Kota Jakarta

Posted in Unspecified

Sumber: iDiva

• 9/6/2013 - Birth Rate In U.s. May Be Leveling Off After Years Of Decline

May Be Leveling Off After Years Of Decline By MIKE STOBBE 09/06/13 12:35 AM ET EDT Subscribe Follow: Birth Rate In U.S. , Babies Born In u.s. , Birth Rate , Number Of Babies Born In u.s. , Number Of Babies In u.s. , Rate Of Birth In u.s. , Healthy Living News ATLANTA -- After falling four years in a row, U.S. births may finally be leveling off. The number of babies born last year a little shy of 4 million is only a few hundred less than the number in 2011, according to a government report released Friday. That suggests that lately, fewer couples may be scared away from having children because of the economy or other factors, some experts say. Among the signs of a possible turning point: The birth rate for women in their early 30s inched up for the first time since 2007. "We may be on level course or potentially even see a rise" in birth trends in the near future, said Brady Hamilton, a statistician with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some are a bit more pessimistic. "The decline has slowed down, but it's still a decline," said Carol Hogue, an Emory University expert on birth trends. Falling births is a relatively new phenomenon in this country. Births were on the rise since the late 1990s and hit an all-time high of more than 4.3 million in 2007. The drop that followed was widely attributed to the nation's flagging economy. Experts believed that many women or couples who were out of work or had other money problems felt they couldn't afford to start or add to their family. The economy officially was in a recession from December 2007 until June 2009. But well into 2011, polls showed most Americans remained gloomy, citing anemic hiring, a depressed housing market and other factors. The new CDC report is a first glimpse at 2012 birth certificate data from state health departments, but the numbers aren't expected to change much. Highlights of the report include: _ The birth rate for all women of childbearing age 63 births per 1,000 women was essentially flat from the year before. _ Rates dropped for Hispanic women, 2 percent, and blacks, 1 percent, but less than the previous year. The rate continued to stay the same for whites, rose 4 percent for Asian-American and Pacific Islanders, and fell slightly for American Indians and Alaska Natives. _ Rates fell again for women in their early 20s, down 3 percent from 2011. That's the lowest mark for women in that age group since 1940, when comprehensive national birth records were first compiled. _ For women in their late 20s, birth rates fell 1 percent. That age group accounts for more than a quarter of all of the nation's births. The rate rose a slight 1 percent for women in their early 30s, who have nearly as many babies as women in their late 20s. _ Rates also rose 2 percent for moms ages 35 and older, and 1 percent for women in their early 40s. Rates in older moms have been rising slightly in recent years, despite the overall downward trend. Experts say that's because older women generally have better jobs or financial security, and are more sensitive to the ticking away of their biological clocks. _ Birth rates for teen moms have been falling since 1991 and hit yet another historic low. The number of babies born to teens last year about 305,000 is less than half the peak of nearly 645,000 in 1970. The teen birth rate has been cut in half since 1991, said Bill Albert of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, who called it a "stunning turnaround." Experts attribute that decline to a range of factors, including less sex and more use of contraception. Another report highlight: About 33 percent of births last year were delivered through Cesarean section a rate unchanged from the previous two years. C-sections are sometimes medically necessary. But health officials believe many are done out of convenience or unwarranted caution, and in the 1980s set a goal of keeping the national rate at 15 percent. The C-section rate had been rising steadily since 1996, until it dropped slightly in 2010. Even if the C-section rate has peaked, it's still too high particularly in certain states, Emory's Hogue said. For example, last year 40 percent of births were C-sections in Louisiana, and more than 38 percent in New Jersey, Mississippi and Florida, the report found. "There's a lot of room for improvement," she said. ___ Loading Slideshow Their Baby Cuteness Doesn't Predict Adult Attractiveness A study published in the journal Infant Behavior & Development revealed that the standard "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby" has little to do with reality. When 253 college students were asked to rank photos of the same individuals as infants and young adults (without being told who was who), there was no relationship between how cute the students found the babies and how attractive they found the grown-ups. They're Good At Sharing No, really, it's true. It doesn't matter how many times you've heard the shout "Mine!" -- research shows babies can sense fairness at 15 months. During one study at the University of Washington, 47 babies observed videos of an experimenter distributing milk and crackers to two people. When one recipient received more food than the other, the babies paid more attention. That means they had expected a fair distribution. The researchers also found that babies who did notice unfairness were more likely to share their own toys. They Read Minds OK, so they're not exactly psychic. But a recent study from the University of Missouri found that babies just 10 months old are starting to follow the thought processes of others. Yuyan Luo, an associate professor of developmental psychology who conducted the study, tells The Huffington Post, "Babies, like adults, when they see something for the first time -- when something is surprising -- they look for a long time. It shows [they recognize] something is inconsistent." It's called the "violation of expectation," she explained. When babies are surprised by something or notice something unexpected has happened, they tend to gaze at that thing longer. In Luo's research, babies watched actors consistently choose object A (such as a block or a cylinder) over object B. When an actor then switched to object B, the babies stared for about five to six seconds longer, meaning they recognized the change in preference. They're A Little Bit Racist Don't judge a book by its cover. Treat all people the same. We're all equals. These are sentiments parents strive to teach their kids from a very young age. And they should. Starting, like, immediately. Researchers at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom found that babies at three months begin showing a preference for the faces of people of their own race. But not all hope for equality is lost. The same study showed that babies who are exposed to people of all different races are less likely to develop bias at such an early age. The Rhythm Is Gonna Get Them Researchers from Brigham Young University found that five-month-old babies can identify an upbeat song as being different from a series of sad, slow songs. In other words, they are happy. They know it. They will clap their hands. Or stare longer, as the case may be. The experimenters showed babies an emotionless face while music played. When they played a new sad song, the babies looked away. When the music pepped up, the babies stared for three to four seconds longer. They Can Tell The Good Guy From The Bad Guy Babies have a sense of morality at six months old, say Yale researchers. During the Yale study, babies watched a puppet show in which a wooden shape with eyes tried to climb a hill over and over again. Sometimes a second puppet helped him up the hill, and other times a third puppet pushed him down. After watching the act several times, the babies were presented with both puppets. They showed a clear preference for the good characters over the bad ones by reaching to play with the good puppet. They Can Read Lips ... Kind Of Dr. Janet Werker of the University of British Columbia, who studies how babies perceive language, found that if a mother spoke two languages while pregnant, her infant could recognize the difference between the two. And they don't even have to be spoken out loud. Werker's research found that infants four to six months old can visually discriminate two languages when watching muted videos of someone speaking both. Contribute to this Story:

• 9/4/2013 - Why Eating Less Wont Automatically Lead To Weight Loss - By Katerina Nikolas - Helium

Posted in Unspecified

We have to consider less of what and how much less. If the normal daily diet consists of a large meat pizza with four kinds of cheese, and one eats seven slices instead of eight, it really wont make much difference in the scheme of things. Conversely if you go to the opposite extreme and eat a few starvation calories consisting of cottage cheese and celery, this wont have the desired affect either. Portion size and healthy eating are the key factors if you generally tend to overeat, and this has lead to weight gain . Or maybe the weight gain wasnt from eating huge portions but from constant snacking and grazing. You may eat a lot more than you actually realize as people tend to minimize the effects of the odd few packets of chips and chocolate bars, and those large frothy cappuccinos. Some of the coffees you can grab in a hurry have more calories than the average meal. This shows it isnt just the amount you eat which may contribute to weight gain, but the amount you snack on or drink as well, so be honest with yourself and assess the real amount of food and beverages you consume in one day. It is possible to lose weight without even trying, by cutting down on those things between meals which are consumed out of habit or boredom, and not always out of hunger. You can still enjoy three healthy meals a day with fruit in between, and lose weight , by omitting high calorie drinks, sodas and processed snack items from your diet. Going too far the other way and living on fresh air, fasting or following impossibly low calorie controlled diets wont help you to lose weight, apart from an initial loss of water bloat. What they will lead to is a slowing down of your metabolism so that it then fails to process food at a normal speed, once the diet is over. Many dieters fall into this trap, which is deliberately set by the people who promote diets, in order to make you become a repeat dieter. If their methods worked there would be no one left to buy their diet books. Making a concerted effort to change from processed foods to fresh foods will make a huge difference to weight loss , and just because something comes in a packet and says diet on the front does not mean it is healthy if it is processed. If you chose fresh healthy food you could actually eat more and lose weight, as a diet rich if fruit and vegetables instead of high fructose corn syrup and sodium is the natural way to eat. When water replaces sodas, and freshly prepared foods replace junk meals, there is no need to go hungry in the quest to lose weight. Learn more about this author, Katerina Nikolas . • 9/1/2013 - Weight Loss | Sugar Land, Texas | Sugar Land Wellness And Weightlosssugar Land, Texas | Sugar Land Wellness And Weightloss

The main want is to be enticing and accepted however it is changing into a tougher goal to achieve. The fitness industry is booming however nonetheless a lot of people are unable to cut these fats in spite of all the train and weight loss plan efforts. In America, greater than sixty per cent of adults are overweight and thirty per cent are thought-about obese. Its because: one, loads of weight loss products promises unrealistic targets; two, dietary supplement manufacturers depend on the overweight persons failure to survive; and three, the details about the dietary supplements in the market are simply written by themselves simply to make a sell. Although the Food and Drug Administration has efficiently banned illegal entrepreneurs, some products are nonetheless available. Shoppers can be deceived of the labels which claims caffeine or ephedra fee not realizing that these dietary supplements composes of other components that may pose the same health risks. These embody heart and digestive issues, complications, insomnia, and even psychological side effects. Different supplement manufacturers say that their products incorporates EGCG which is a phytochemical ingredient present in green tea. This so-called component claims to hurry up metabolism however in reality poses to reduce the chance of cancer. Some studies denote that it may barely improve the potential to burn calories and now can be discovered in many weight loss supplements. It has good points then again for the reason that physique might conform to EGCG after a period of time. Eve the weight loss benefit may sum up to 60 to 70 calories a day. This helps forestall extreme weight gain. Just a few other vital effects of weight loss dietary supplements is that it may contain components that makers claim will forestall the absorption of carbohydrates. One good instance is Chitosan, which appears most promising, which the truth is shows no constructive result in fats absorption. It may even take up to seven months for males to lose only a pound of physique fats and for ladies, there isnt any fats loss at all. Thyroid dietary supplements act as thyroid replacements help regulate and optimize the thyroid at a better level. This they are saying makes the physique feel like a sofa potato and gainedt carry out the job it has to. For the reason that primary cause why people eat is as a result of they feel hungry, theres one other sort of ingredient that manufacturers made which increases the sensation of being full and reduces urge for food, Guar Gum. Nevertheless, latest studies present that it has no meaningful benefit in any respect to weight loss. Its ironic that manufacturers combine Psyllium that has the popularity of reducing consuming and aiding weight loss for initial studies to this point do not support this claim although it helps control blood cholesterol and sugar. One of the latest improvements within the fats loss industry is by the use of pores and skin absorption. Theres a Chopping Gel, which is an epidril product by far one of the best selling in fats loss creams technology. Rub it the place you need the fat cut. For now, it is going to seem safer to advise the age previous treatments to extreme weight gain and that is to take a position on walking sneakers as an alternative of weight loss plan dietary supplements, go to the park and do brisk walking, go to the health club, and have a effectively balanced weight loss plan instead.

Tired of counting points? Allow us to help you achieve your ideal weight through a unique method called NeuroAssist. How it works: The NeuroAssist method of weight loss was developed by physicians at the University of Minnesota, and works with your brain chemistry to suppress appetite. Scientifically speaking, we use amino acids to create neurotransmitters, or the bridges that connect the wires in your brain. Without adequate neurotransmitters, you may feel depressed, hungry or anxious. By raising these levels, we adjust your appetite without any unpleasant side effects. The program requires the following commitments in order to be successful and safe: 1. You must take the supplements as they are prescribed. 2. You must follow the recommended calorie-restricted diet. 3. You must keep your follow-up appointments. 4. YoYou must check your urine each day for ketones, which will be explained to you during your first appointment. Of note exercise is encouraged, but not required for this programs success. Exercise is more important from a weight maintenance aspect once goal weight is achieved. I encourage each person to exercise, but it is not mandatory for weight loss success. What about exercise? Exercise is encouraged, but not required for this programs success. Its more important for weight maintenance once your goal weight is achieved.

• 8/30/2013 - Dieting for obese mothers just before pregnancy may not be enough

Posted in Unspecified

29, 2013 While there is never a bad time to address one's own obesity, if you're hoping to lose weight before conception for the sake of your child, here's some bad news: Some of the epigenetic damage might have already been done, even if you lose the weight just before conception. Knowing how maternal health and behavior affect how genes express themselves in offspring should help health care providers and public health officials develop more precise prenatal strategies to maximize the health of newborn children. "The findings of our study highlight that the nutritional health of the mother in the lead-up to and around conception can result in poor metabolic consequences for the offspring that will persist into later life," said Caroline McMillen, M.D., Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Sansom Institute for Health Research at the University of South Australia. "We hope that the findings of the present study will lead to a focus on how to help obese women lose weight in order to improve their fertility in a manner which does not impact negatively on the health outcomes of their offspring." To make this discovery, McMillen and colleagues examined the embryos conceived in four groups of female sheep. The first group of sheep was overnourished from four months before conception, until one week after conception. The second group of sheep was overnourished for three months and then placed on a diet for one month before and one week after conception. The third group of sheep was placed on a normal or control diet from four months before conception, until one week after conception. The fourth group was fed a control diet for three months and then these normal weight sheep were placed on a diet for one month before conception, until one week after conception. One week after conception, embryos from all of these sheep were transferred to normal weight, normally nourished sheep for the remainder of pregnancy. Liver samples were taken from the lambs born to these ewes at four months of age to examine their genes and proteins. "This discovery helps us to understand how body weight affects our health and the health of our children -- right down to the genetic level," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal.

• 8/28/2013 - Why Vegan Diets Suck | Popular Science

Posted in Unspecified

Keep on doing what youre doing. But I do have a serious problem when proponents of this diet are using lies and fear mongering to try and convince everyone else to eat in the same way. Im tired of having to constantly defend my position regarding animal foods, so I decided to summarize what I think are the key problems with vegan diets. Here are 5 reasons why I think vegan (as in no animal foods at all) diets are a bad idea 1. Vegans are deficient in many important nutrients. Humans are omnivores. We function best eating both animals and plants. There are some nutrients that can only be gotten from plants (like Vitamin C) and others that can only be gotten from animals. Vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin that is involved in the function of every cell in the body. It is particularly important in the formation of blood and the function of the brain. Because B12 is critical for life and isnt found in any amount in plants (except some types of algae), it is by far the most important nutrient that vegans must be concerned with. In fact, B12 deficiency is very common in vegans, one study showing that a whopping 92% of vegans are deficient in this critical nutrient ( 1 ). But B12 is just the tip of the iceberg there are other lesser known nutrients that are only found in animal foods and are critical for optimal function of the body. Here are a few examples: Animal protein contains all the essential amino acids in the right ratios. It is important for muscle mass and bone health, to name a few. Vegans dont get any animal protein , which can have negative effects on body composition ( 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ). Creatine helps form an energy reservoir in cells. Studies show that vegetarians are deficient in creatine, which has harmful effects on muscle and brain function ( 6 , 7 , 8 ). Carnosine is protective against various degenerative processes in the body and may protect against aging. It is found only in animal foods ( 9 , 10 , 11 ). Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) is the most active form of Omega-3 fatty acids in the body and primarily found in animal foods. The plant form of Omega-3s, ALA, is inefficiently converted to DHA in the body ( 12 , 13 , 14 ). Two other nutrients that have been demonized by vegan proponents are saturated fat and cholesterol. Cholesterol is a crucial molecule in the body and is part of every cell membrane. It is also used to make steroid hormones like testosterone . Studies show that saturated fat intake correlates with increased testosterone levels ( 15 ). Not surprisingly, vegans and vegetarians have much lower testosterone levels than meat eaters ( 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ). Bottom line: Vegans are deficient in many important nutrients, including Vitamin B12 and Creatine. Studies show that vegans have much lower testosterone levels than their meat-eating counterparts. Carrots!: Kander via Wikimedia Commons 2. There are no studies showing that theyre better than other diets. Despite what vegan proponents often claim, there are no controlled trials showing that these diets are any better than other diets. They often claim that low-carb, high-fat diets (the opposite of vegan diets) are dangerous and that the evidence clearly shows vegan diets to be superior. I disagree. This has actually been studied in a high quality randomized controlled trial (the gold standard of science). The A to Z study compared the Atkins (low-carb, high-fat) diet to the Ornish (low-fat, near-vegan) diet ( 20 ). This study clearly shows that the Atkins diet causes greater improvements in pretty much all health markers, although not all of them were statistically significant: The Atkins group lost more weight , 10.4 lbs, while the Ornish group lost only 5.6 lbs. The Atkins group had greater decreases in blood pressure. The Atkins group had greater increases in HDL (the good) cholesterol. The Atkins group had greater decreases in Triglycerides. They went down by 29.3 mg/dL on Atkins, only 14.9 mg/dL on Ornish. Then the Atkins dieters were about twice as likely to make it to the end of the study, indicating that the Atkins diet was easier to follow. Put simply, the Atkins diet had several important advantages while the Ornish diet performed poorly for all health markers measured. Now, there are some studies showing health benefits and lower mortality in vegetarians and vegans, such as the Seventh-Day Adventist Studies ( 21 , 22 ). The problem with these studies is that they are so-called observational studies . These types of studies can only demonstrate correlation, not causation. The vegetarians are probably healthier because they are more health conscious overall, eat more vegetables, are less likely to smoke, more likely to exercise, etc. It has nothing to do with avoiding animal foods. In another study of 10,000 individuals, where both the vegetarians and non-vegetarians were health conscious, there was no difference in mortality between groups ( 23 ). One controlled trial showed that a vegan diet was more effective against diabetes than the official diet recommended by the American Diabetes Association ( 24 ). However, a low-carb diet has also been studied for this purpose and led to much more powerful beneficial effects ( 25 ). A vegan diet may be better than the typical low-fat diet recommended by the mainstream nutrition organizations, but pretty much any diet fits that description. Bottom line: Despite all the propaganda, there isnt any evidence that vegan diets are any better than other diets. Most of the studies are observational in nature. Spinach!: Schwabin via Wikimedia Commons 3. Proponents of vegan diets use lies and fear mongering to promote their cause. Some vegan proponents arent very honest when they try to convince others of the virtues of the vegan diet. They actively use lies and fear mongering to scare people away from fat and animal foods. Despite all the propaganda, there really isnt any evidence that meat, eggs , or animal-derived nutrients like saturated fat and cholesterol cause harm. People who promote vegan diets should be more honest and not use scare tactics and lies to make people feel guilty about eating animal foods, which are perfectly healthy (if unprocessed and naturally fed ). Id also like to briefly mention The China Study which is the holy bible of veganism and apparently proves that vegan diets are the way to go. This was an observational study performed by a scientist who was madly in love with his theories. He cherry picked the data from the study to support his conclusions and ignored the data that didnt fit. The main findings of the China study have been thoroughly debunked. I recommend you look at these two critiques: Chris Masterjohn: What Dr. Campbell Wont Tell You About The China Study Also a new study from China came out very recently, directly contradicting the findings of the China study. According to this study, men eating red meat had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and women eating red meat had a lower risk of cancer ( 26 ). Bottom line: Vegan proponents often use fear mongering and scare tactics in order to convince people not to eat animal foods. They frequently cite The China Study as evidence, which has been thoroughly debunked. Eggplant: yvind Holmstad via Wikimedia Commons 4. Vegan diets may work in the short term, for other reasons. If you look at vegan message boards, you will quickly find stories of people who have seen amazing health benefits on a vegan diet. Ive got no reason to believe that these people are lying. But its important to keep in mind that this is anecdotal evidence , which isnt science. You will find the same kinds of success stories for pretty much any diet. Then youll also find tons of people saying they got terrible results on a vegan diet. Personally, I think that vegan diets can have health benefits for a lot of people at least in the short term, before the nutrient deficiencies kick in (which can be partly circumvented by supplementation). However, I dont think this has anything to do with avoiding animal foods! Vegan diets dont just recommend that people avoid animal foods. They also recommend that people avoid added sugars , refined carbohydrates, processed vegetable oils and trans fats. Then they suggest that people stop smoking and start exercising. There are so many confounders here that can easily explain all the beneficial effects. These are extremely unhealthy foods , thats something the vegans and I agree on. I personally think that avoiding these foods is what is causing the apparent benefits. I am 100% certain that a plant-based diet that includes at least a little bit of animals (the occasional whole egg or fatty fish, for example) will be much healthier in the long-term than a diet that eliminates animal foods completely. Bottom line: Vegan diets also recommend that people shun added sugar, refined carbohydrates, vegetable oils and trans fats. This is probably the reason for any health benefits, not the removal of unprocessed animal foods. Garden tomatoes!: National Museum of Natural History 5. There is NO health reason to completely avoid animal foods. Humans have been eating meat for hundreds of thousands (or millions) of years. We evolved this way. Our bodies are perfectly capable of digesting, absorbing and making full use of the many beneficial nutrients found in animal foods. It is true that processed meat causes harm and that its disgusting the way conventionally raised animals are treated these days. However, animals that are fed natural diets (like grass-fed cows) and given access to the outdoors are completely different. Even though processed meat causes harm, which is supported by many studies, the same does NOT apply to natural, unprocessed meat. Unprocessed red meat , which has been demonized in the past, really doesnt have any association with cardiovascular disease, diabetes or the risk of death ( 27 , 28 ). It has only a very weak link with an increased risk of cancer and this is probably caused by excessive cooking, not the meat itself ( 29 , 30 , 31 ). Saturated fat has also never been proven to lead to heart disease. A study of almost 350 thousand individuals found literally no association between saturated fat consumption and cardiovascular disease ( 32 , 33 , 34 ). Studies on eggs show no effect either. Multiple long-term studies have been conducted on egg consumption, which are very rich in cholesterol, and found no negative effects ( 35 , 36 ).

• 8/25/2013 - Difference between glucose and sucrose - by Eileen Eva - Helium

Posted in Unspecified

Then he looked out his window and saw a man riding a bicycle ByFrank Bures Late one afternoon in 2002, Scott Cutshall's Grand Am rolled toward the leafy Jersey City, New Jersey, neighborhood where he, his wife and their daughter lived on the ground floor of a brownstone apartment. The car was silent, except for a quiet refrain. "I'm a dead man," the 38-year-old Cutshall said. "I'm a dead man." In the driver's seat sat his wife, Amy, who had asked him to see a doctor about his weight, which then hovered at 427 pounds, and would later top out at 501. In back sat three-year-old Chloe, who Cutshall cared for as best he could given how little he could move. The news was not good. The doctor gave him six months to live without bariatric surgery. With it, the doctor said, Cutshall had a 50 percent chance of making it out of the operating room. "I'm a dead man," said Cutshall, sobbing softly. Over the next few years, even as he defied that dire prediction, every doctor, every authority he consulted would give him equally urgent warnings. Everyone told him the same thing: Lose weight or die. At the doctor's office that day in 2002, Cutshall had voiced the foremost question in his mind. "Do you think I can lose the weight on my own?" "No," the doctor had said. "At your weight, I've never heard of anyone doing it." Cutshall had known despair before thisespecially during one bad patch, when Amy had grown so frustrated at his refusal to undergo surgery that she'd taken Chloe and left. For good? For a little while? He didn't know. But while she was gone, Cutshall had followed the only path he could see out. He'd gone into the bathroom with a box cutter and carved open his wrists. Then he'd waited. He had waited for the struggle, for the hopelessness to slip away. But they hadn't. They were still there. He was still there. So he cut deeper. It had hurt more, but still, nothing had happened. Later the doctors would tell him that because he was so obese, his blood kept clotting and pooling inside his wrists. Being fat had saved his life...for a while. Now, as the car stopped outside his apartment, Cutshall opened the door and reached for the ground with his foot. He pushed off the steering wheel to get himself out, but the column cracked loose under his weight. Somehow, he managed to exit and lumber up the front stairs. There, he settled back into the deep hole he'd dug for himself. As he sat there with his family, Amy told him something he would never hear from anyone else. "I think you can do it yourself," she said. "But you have to want to." Cutshall was always fat; it runs in his family. Growing up in Meadville, Pennsylvania, he and his older brother blew up right around puberty, no matter how much they ran, how fast they swam, or how hard they rode their bikes. Their swim coach called them Gut and Minigut.

They use these terms to refer to common sugar. This piece will therefore outline the difference between glucose and sucrose with the aim of enlightening individuals on what each means and their importance to the body. Another goal is to mainly help those with type 2 diabetes to differentiate between the types of sugar they consume and thus be able to appropriately reduce the amounts they consume. To begin with, glucose is a monosaccharide (simple sugar) while sucrose is classified as table sugar including brown, confectioners, granulated and raw sugar. Being monosaccharide, glucose has the following chemical formula C6H12O6. On the other hand, sucrose is formed when glucose and fructose (another type of simple sugar) are combined. The chemical formula for sucrose is C12 (H2O) 11, a disaccharide. Usually, sucrose is formed from the combination of an alpha glucose and fructose. In nature, glucose exists in two forms: alpha and beta. The other difference between glucose and sucrose lies in the fact that glucose contains only six carbon molecules in its chemical formula thus a monosaccharide while sucrose contains 12 carbon molecules making it a disaccharide. This difference also affects the ability of the body system to absorb glucose and sucrose from their consumed sources. Glucose has a simpler molecular structure than sucrose; therefore it is easily broken down to its constituents including water, carbohydrate and oxygen. This boosts bodys ability to absorb it, and its efficiency in converting glucose to energy. Sucrose has a more complex molecular structure; therefore the body takes time before it breaks it down to its constituents, glucose and fructose, and then absorbs them into the blood stream and liver. Moreover, unlike sucrose, glucose triggers the production of insulin, leptin and decrease of ghrelin hormones. Insulin aids in the absorption of glucose while leptin moderates the appetite for food and the process for fat storage. Ghrelin on the other hand, increases the feeling of hunger. Therefore, to control ones eating capacity, it is necessary for the body to decrease production of the ghrelin hormone. Sucrose is mainly derived from sugar cane and beet root juice. Due to its high level of sweetness, it is added to processed food such as maple syrup, chocolates and candies among others. Glucose on the other hand, is mainly derived from sap of plants. Any type of sugar contains calories which increase with its sweetness. High levels of calories consumption pose grave consequences to the health of individuals. Sources:

• 8/23/2013 - Why unrealistic weight loss can cause failure - by Katerina Nikolas - Helium

Foods which come labelled with the diet logo have something in common no matter which diet they belong to: they inevitably come in a packet, box, frozen food tray, tub or bottle and are packed with artificial sugar or high fructose corn syrup, laden with sodium and have a delicious blend of chemicals, artificial flavors, colorings and preservatives. Actual real healthy food which forms the basis of a healthy diet which will help you to lose weight does not come packaged with diet labels and cooking directions on the best way to hydrate your meal. Diet foods really should be avoided if you want to achieve a sustainable weight loss . It has been proven statistically that diets end in long term failure at least 95% of the time, so feeding yourself with diet foods and diet sodas is a mistake which can easily be avoided by refusing to waste your money on them. Other foods to avoid if you want to eat a healthy diet are not as many as dieters are lead to believe. Most foods contribute something to good nutrition and the only things which should be permanently eliminated from a healthy diet are trans fats and foods either fried in them or which have trans fats added. The excess fat and skin on meat and poultry; full fat dairy products; and products which contribute absolutely zilch to nutritional needs such as sodas. Processed foods should be avoided as much as possible in any healthy diet which is the basis for sustainable weight loss , but this can be incorporated as a gradual change. Dieters are conditioned to avoid certain foods in general such as potatoes, bread, pasta, eggs, rice and even fruit. There is no need at all to avoid such foods when trying to lose weight; just exercise some sensible portion control and dont deep fry them all. Oven baked potato slices drizzled with olive oil are not the same enemy as a box of hydrated fast food fries made from reconstituted processed potatoes dipped in trans fats. The natural sugar in fruit isnt going to make you fat but the added high fructose corn syrup in a diet yogurt may. Most foods can be enjoyed when you strive to lose weight, if you just remember moderation is the key when it comes to how much you pile onto your plate. A move from processed foods to fresh foods will leave it hard for you to gain weight if you pay attention to how you cook them, and fresh foods will save you far more money than living on a diet of packet diet shakes and calorie depleted chocolate puddings. If you fill up on fiberpacked foods the hunger pangs will soon disappear.Once healthy eating takes the place of diet foods then indulgences can be enjoyed with complete abandon and without guilt, as long as its not a daily thing. Fad diets which proclaim quick weight loss results are setting you up for failure even as you begin them. If you follow their unhealthy methods you will achieve rapid unsustainable weight loss and the pounds will soon pile back on. The only way to lose weight sensibly and to keep it off is to approach it in a realistic manner and realise that when you fall for diet scams which promise instant success you are simply sabotaging any long term goals. Most of the fad diets on the market deprive you of vital calories. Starving yourself is not the right way to go about weight loss as you need the vital nutrients and vitamins which come from a healthy balanced diet. There is no point in pursuing rapid weight loss if you then intend to revert to old habits as soon as the diet prison term has expired, as the weight will simply return. When you lose weight very quickly through inadequate calorie intake you are simply losing water weight and bloat. The desired fat reduction is unlikely to take place but you could end up losing some of your vital muscle mass if you leave necessary nutrients out of your diet. When the diet finishes you will naturally return to your previous weight within a few months, as the water loss was superficial. So many of the fad diets promise weight loss without the need to exercise or learn portion control, and place too much emphasis on leaving out certain foods which are perfectly fine to eat but which fall into one of their forbidden categories. To lose weight successfully you need to eat and be active. Instead of cutting out ridiculous foods such as fruit and dairy as some diets recommend, cut out the junk foods and processed foods instead, and eat healthy foods. Although you may not feel the same euphoria as the weight comes off gradually as you may not even notice it, the end result of slow and steady weight loss will be a slimmer body which has not suffered diet deprivation along the way. Losing weight steadily by incorporating exercise and plenty of water will result in your body obtaining a more toned look, whilst rapid weight loss will leave you with unsightly pockets of flab. The only way in which quick weight loss is sustainable is if you continue to starve yourself long term which will lead to ill health or anorexia. As that cannot be anyones wish when they set out to lose weight it makes far more sense to recognize at the start that an attempt to lose the pounds too quickly is going to inevitably end in failure. It is only by understanding which habits have caused the weight to pile on, and changing to more healthy eating , that you can expect to embark on a weight loss program which doesnt inevitably end in failure. Have you heard of this juice cleanse? Are you gluten free? Have you heard of that juice cleanse? What do you do for cardio? How often do you run? Do you do Pilates? What do you think of Crossfit? Do you lift weights? Do you wear a heart rate monitor, Nike Fuel Band, Jawbone, etc.? Which yoga poses will strengthen my core? And lift my butt? Do you think I should do a juice cleanse? I get a lot of questions about my personal and professional approach to fitness, including those above and many more. Each time Im asked by a reader, yoga student, Om Athlete, curious media type, or casual acquaintance at, say, a dinner party, Im delighted toforgive me weigh in. I enjoy the fact that people trust me; it means Im doing work Im meant to do, helping people become more healthy and mindful, and Im happy to share knowledge acquired over the years. Ive studied a lot, experienced a lot, and been exposed to a lot, through a lifetime of playing sports, 18 years of practicing yoga, 13 years of teaching it, and the privilege of working with some of the fittest and fastest athletes in the world about what it means to look, feel, and perform your best. But my favorite piece of advice is the same for everyone, and it has nothing to do with explicitly choosing a diet or type of exercise. Its about choosing a mindset or, possibly, a heart set. Because the truth is not about what you do, but rather, why you do it. I believe the intention behind anything colors everything, which is why my diet advice is not a diet. My most killer workout secret is not some grand secret. Im not hiding stealth spa procedures or supplements in my bicycle basket.Im not fired up by fitness fads or new technology that tracks my every calorie taken in or burned off. (I respect that many people like and benefit from health trends and technology; I just dont think theyre essential to my point or your wellness). Personally, I do a lot of yoga. I run a lot. I eat a lot. What I eat has read like Michael Pollans advice long before he wrote In Defense of Food and other books widely regarded as manifestos foreating mindfully: eat real food, not too much. Mostly plants. But, sometimes, chocolate covered salted caramels. (I added that last part). Professionally, Im like a sherpa for surpassing mind/body limitations, and my approach to yoga might cause your kid to turn to you and say, Wow, Mom, youre STRONG! Youre stronger than Daddy, as the child of one of my clients did at the beach over the weekend when she tossed him high in the air so that he landed in the ocean with delight like it was no big deal. In the past, Ive been too thin and too heavy. I ended up too thin by accident, at a time when I felt very heavyas in emotionally. I wasnt trying to lose weight. It just happened as a result of the stress of what was happening in my life. I couldnt have cared less about scales or pant sizes. Ironically, I was too heavy while trying too hard to be thin. Roughly around college, as the current often pulls women that age. It was my personal heyday of low fat frozen yogurt, Diet Coke, and other fake foods about which I didnt know better and were the diet de rigueur of the time. Now, I know better, and I stay away from that stuff. Its not a diet. Its chemical junk that messes with your hormones and doesnt add any nutritional value anywhere. I dont eat other non-food stuff like Play-Doh or glue. Thats not a diet. Its common sense. And, ultimately, thats the secret weapon I want people to rediscover. Good sense. Stop cleansing. Start sensing. Ask yourself this one essential question: WHAT DO YOU WANT TO EMBODY? Seriously. Think about it. Because the answer will be telling, and the actions needed to achieve your desired state will be clear. If you know how you want to feel, youll intuitively know what to do to get there. You dont want to embody artificial colors, flavors, or feelings. You dont want to embody scarcity and deprivation. If you want to embody strength or confidence, you cant choose diets, fitness inspirations, or yoga teachers that encourage diminishment or depletion. Its that simple. If you want to feel joyful and light, you cant choose workouts that are drudgery or self-talk that is demoralizing. Maybe youll lose weight on a certain diet, cleanse, or workout regime, but will you feel light? Will it last? Or, will it dissipatelike anyones capacity to stay on a diet or regime, and youll have to search for the next fitness fix during the next dinner party conversation. If you want to embody speed or endurance, your workouts must prioritize the same. If you want to feel energetic and endorphin-drunk, then youve got to get up and move like your life depends on it (because it does). If you want to embody beauty, youll have to do things that genuinely make you feel beautiful. They are not usually available in stores. They frequently include smiling or laughing. Remember: mindset. Heart set. The way we move our bodies and how we nourish them are beautiful opportunities every day. Meanwhile, getting too caught up in how we label ourselves according to what we eat (i.e. vegan, paleo, gluten-free, etc.) and forgetting that the best wellness resource we have is our own mind only leads to more of the same. Change how you think. Start with what you want to embody, and let that word, feeling, or mantra dictate the health choices you make. Embody grace. Eat energy for breakfast. Run with heart-pumping, leg burning, soul exhilarating speed. Balance with confidence. Breathe with love. Put on your clothes with joy. Take them off with acceptance. Embody yourself fully. Its a beautiful thing. I loved this Rebecca! Such honest strength behind it. Caroline This is amazing and SO inspirational. Thank you alisa Miss you, Rebecca! Thank you for your inspiration Love from Kauai! jennifer mikoll Absolutely love this post! Thank you for writing from the heart, it truly resonated with me. I am bookmarking to re-read it, because I know that it will be necessary. I am also bookmarking it to share with each friend who confides their struggles and insecurity, and hopefully someday when I have a daughter (or son) to help guide them on the right path to health & self-love, and not to self-criticism. xoxo Bruce Erdman <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 Catta The way we move our bodies and how we nourish them are beautiful opportunities every day. Well said! Thank you for this post! Satpal Chander What a fantastic post. It has stopped me my tracks, re-evaluate what I need to do for getting healthly/dieting Bill Gere

Stop eating junk food Many people do not realize how many calories that add to their diet with junk food. One candy bar can have a lot of calories as well as fat, much of it the saturated kind. It is amazing how bad one fast food burger can be or a piece of oily pizza. If you can take these things out of your diet, then you might start to see the weight melt away fast. If you feel like you need to have at least the taste of something sweet, then you could consider having some sweet fruit instead or having some extremely tiny candy such as a couple of chocolate chips just to get the flavor. Stop the sugary drinks and have water instead Another place that people consume a lot of calories without realizing it is when they have a lot of sugary drinks. Many people have a lot of soda, which gives you a lot of calories for little nutritional benefit. Drinks dont tend to fill people up like food does so you might still eat the same. If you have water instead (or another low calorie drink) then again, the weight might start to disappear fast. Snack on vegetables Vegetables are a wonderful food item to snack on. Not only are they super-good for you, filled with heart-disease and cancer fighting nutrients, but most of them have very few calories. If you are a muncher and like to just be eating all the time, then this might be something that you can do that with and still shed the pounds quickly. There are many diets that even let you have as much of this as you want. Lower your caloric intake Its not rocket science to lose weight . If you lower your caloric intake, it should happen. Again, be careful about lowering it too much because you do not want to initiate health problems. Also, if you lower it too much your body might go into starvation mode and then it can be more difficult to lose the weight. Eat healthy foods and in moderation in order to shed those pounds quickly. Losing weight can be a challenge but it can be done. Make sure that any diet is safe before you undertake it. Learn more about this author, Suzanne Rose . • 8/6/2013 - How to Live a Healthy Life with Nutrition

Posted in Unspecified

Health and nutrition go hand in hand. If you incorporate nutrition for a healthy living in your everyday basics, you can prevent and avoid a plethora of chronic illnesses and a host of clinical bills! It is true, we are what we eat. Oil infested deep fried foods, crisps and junk, fatty indulgences and sugar oozing drinks may be delicious on the tongue but painstaking to the heart and brain health both! Nutrition for a healthy living is highly essential. Incorporating proteins, the right kind of fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals is what promotes healthy living. So, when you ask yourself how to live a healthy life, know that ensuring you have an adequate supply and intake of the above mentioned nutrients is the answer to your calling. Lets review these basic essential nutrients for a healthy living in detail. Proteins Amino acids which are inhabitant in proteins are very important to our body for growth and repair purposes. Moreover, proteins are what build all the major tissue and tissues in the body! Proteins are the backbone to nutrient importance. It is the enzymes in the body that do most of the work, and these enzymes happen to be based on proteins. Proteins also play an essential role in carrying messages around the body, transporting hormones all throughout and passing signals across the cell membranes to the DNA. It is fair to say without proteins, the bodys functioning is likely to get disrupted and suffer utter distress. Heres a little horrid sounding fact about these mystery nutrients. If the body does not gain a sufficient supply of proteins, the body begins to break down the muscles and tissues to gain the amino acids it needs to carry out all the important functions of the body, that is, it begins to feed on itself! Lack of proteins in the body displays itself in the form of falling hair, brittle nails, a poor immunity system, unstable muscle growth and skin injuries. Foods high in proteins include meats, vegetables, grains, pulses, egg whites etc. Nutrition for a healthy living can be easily derived by keeping at pace with the bodys proteins requirements. Carbohydrates Nutrition for a healthy living comprises of the much essential carbohydrates that can be found readily in fruits, vegetables, cereals and grains. About 40-45% of the bodys energy requirements are met with the help of carbohydrate intake. This nutrient is particularly important in promoting intestinal health. Root vegetables such as potatoes and parsnips and cereals such as rice, millet, rye, barley and oat are heavily loaded with carbohydrates. Vitamins and Minerals Our body needs a substantial amount of a variety of vitamins and minerals to function at optimal levels. Health and nutrition and its importance can be traced down to that of minerals and vitamins in our body. This plethora of minerals and vitamins include all those components that are essential for various body functions. Vitamin C is a powerhouse antioxidant on its own and benefits our bodies by keeping it at bay from free radical damage, infectious diseases and viruses. Vitamin k helps in bone fortification and proper growth of the body. Vitamin B complexes help as co-factors for enzymes in metabolism as well as various synthetic functions inside the body. Vitamin B complexes help in boosting energy, combating everyday stress, control our cravings and speeding up our metabolism. Vitamin D is very important for preventing breast and other cancers and the list of vitamins go on. Coming down to minerals, the list is extensive. Potassium, iron, copper, zinc, magnesium, manganese, potassium and phosphorous to name a few are minerals highly essential for our body and a nutritional and healthy living. For a better insight into the importance of a certain few minerals, know that potassium helps the body regulate the blood pressure levels and heart rates, manganese is used as a co-factor of superoxide dismutase, an anti-oxidant enzyme and iron is essential in the body for the production of red blood cells! Foods rich in these minerals and vitamins are a number of fruits and vegetables such as apples, lemons, kiwis, berries, grapes, dried fruits, cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, the greens and anything really that classifies as a fruit or a veggie! Fats We extensively know of fats as the main culprits to weight gain and obesity. What we miss out on is the fact that fats are highly essential when it comes to answering how to live a healthy life. Fats act as a protecting shield to the cells in our body. Fats are highly essential for promoting brain health, a strong immunity system and cardiovascular efficiency. When it comes to nutrition and health, fats are highly essential! What we need to really do is distinguish between the good kind of fats and the bad kind of fats. The best kind of fats happen to be monounsaturated fats found in nuts, olives, avocados, cashews, pistachios, peanuts, sunflower seeds etc. Following these, next in line are polysaturated fatty acids that are found widely in soybeans, walnuts, corn, almonds, eggs, shrimp, lean meat, sunflower seeds etc. Lastly come in the omega 3 fatty acids that are prevalent in fish, nuts and flaxseed. The bad kind of fat consists of saturated fat and trans fat, found in bacon, cheese, shortening and the likes.

• 8/3/2013 - Fitbit Flex or Jawbone Up: Which is the better fitness companion for your wrist?

Posted in Unspecified

Both the Fibit Flex ($99.95) and the Jawbone Up ($129.99) want to help you win the battle of the bulge using your iPhone as a key weapon. Apple has a strong interest in wearable computing , especially with how these devices fit in to the iDevice ecosystem, and both the Fitbit and Jawbone products are featured in many Apple Stores. Although Jawbones Up and Fitbits Flex are both wrist-based devices, they have some key differences that will interest body hackers. Ive been using wearable fitness technology for over a year in my own training and evaluated how both of these gadgets work with Apple devices. Which one is best for you depends on your goals and objectives. Fitbit Flex: Its about the competition Ive been an active Fitbit user for years, migrating from the Ultra to the One and now to the Flex. What keeps me motivated is the installed base of Fitbit users also on the program. Im constantly motivated to do more steps and keep up with the competition. However, Fitbit users know one of the key frustrations with the device: its easy to forget you have it on and accidentally throw it in the wash or misplace it. Since the Flex is worn on your wrist, you are less likely to lose it. Additionally, it is water-resistant so you can wear it in the shower and do your normal activities without fear of water damage. To charge the Flex, you remove it from the wristband and place it in a USB charger. This flexibility, pardon the pun, comes with a reduction in functionality, however. Gone from the Fitbit is a detailed display and stopwatch. While you can track your progress of steps throughout the day on the Flex with a series of five dots that indicates how close you are to the goal, you cant know the exact number without the iPhone. Missing from the Flex is the altimeter (stair flight tracking) that both the previous Ultra and the current One track. The Flex will also track the length and quality of your sleep by detecting motion in the night. It will vibrate to wake you up. Similar to the One, the device syncs using Bluetooth 4.0 with the iPhone 4S and above allowing users to check their progress throughout the day or in real time (I try to kick it up a notch while on the treadmill). The quick and easy sync almost makes up for the lack of display, something I suspect most users will only be slightly annoyed by in the Flex. The Flex includes the same food diary and weight-tracker app the other Fitbit products have to keep you accountable during the day. The Fitbit data can be edited and appended via the Fitbit website so if you cant track while away from the computer, you can add the info later. Third-party APIs offer additional features such as a more detailed food diary or an incentive program via Walgreens. Jawbone Up: Its about you The Jawbone Up, after a rocky start, is a solid and effective fitness tracker. However, in spite of some unique strengths, the Up has a few notable downsides when compared with the Flex One key difference between the Flex and the UP is the Up does not sync via Bluetooth thereby giving it twice the battery life of the Flex (10 days in contrast to the Flexs five days) and works with any iOS device running iOS 5.1 or greater. Syncing is instead done via the headphone jack and not in real time: you must remove the device in order to sync. Syncing takes just a few seconds and you cant take any calls while syncing because the headphone jack is in use. The band is water-resistant and can be worn all day. However, the Up electronics take up the entire band and thus can be damaged easier. In contrast, the Flexs electronics are only a small portion of the band. My first Up failed due to possible over-flexing of the band because I tried wearing it on my ankle while working out. Similar to the Flex, the Up tracks steps (but not stairs) as well as sleep with a vibrating alarm, but the Up adds an optimal wake-up window, analyzing your motion and waking you during the lighter portions of your sleep cycle rather than jarring you awake in the middle of deep sleep. Personally, I didnt notice much of a difference here, but its a nice touch. The sleep function includes the ability to take a power nap and be woken at the optimal time as well. While the Jawbone Up has a team function in which you can compete with others, I couldnt find any friends using the device to test this function; I have several dozen using the Fitbit tracker. The Up will analyze your data and give you motivational messages via the iOS app. Its called Insights, and the feature gives you suggestions based on the data it receives such as getting more sleep and compares your sleep and activities. The device will remind you to keep moving throughout the day via an optional idle alert that vibrates your Up if you sit for too long. You can even tell it your mood for the day and it will factor that into the analysis. The Up app is your motivator and coach throughout your day. Credit: Thinkstock The food diary is much more extensive in the Up and includes a larger database of food as well as the ability to add entries via a picture or scanning a barcode. By including so much data, the app keeps you very accountable as to what you eat.And similar to the Fitbit, the Up includes an API that allows a variety of third-party apps to extend the functionality and data analysis of the Up. Unlike the Fitbit, however, the data on the Up is for native mobile apps only. It can be read or modified on an iPhone, iPad or Android but not the web unless you use third-party apps via the API. This can make tracking a bit tricky if you dont have your iPhone handy. What are the key similarities and differences? Both the Flex and the Up sometimes have trouble detecting motions, in particular when on a bicycle or cardio machines such as an elliptical. I had to move my arms constantly or put them in my pocket to get them to register. Because you can remove the Flexs electronics, that also means you can change the color of the band after purchase. The Flex wristband is adjustable, while the Up offers only small, medium and large sizes with no swapping out of colors. Both are comfortable, but I had trouble with the clasp on the Flex getting in the way while typing, though it had a flatter profile overall than the Up. Other than these differences the devices work very similar and its a tough decision. Which is best for you: Flex or Up? If you are motivated by competition with friends, the Flex is a good choice. The app or the website lets you know how you are doing compared to your friends. Personally, I got very motivated by these comparisons if I saw a friend was close to reaching one of my goals (steps, miles, etc.), I might park the car further away or take the dog for a longer walk. The social element for some is a key aspect of these devices so finding others that have these devices is an important consideration. If you are more self-motivated, the Up may be a better choice because of the more detailed food diary and trend analysis of your sleep and steps, which can be very empowering. The insights and idle alarms are designed to motivate you and replace the motivation caused by competition. The Up is also compatible with older devices such as the iPhone 4 or 3GS because it uses the headphone port, unlike the Flex which needs Bluetooth 4.0 to interface directly with your phone. Whichever device you choose youll still need to do the exercise so go out and enjoy the summer and use your iPhone (or Android device) to improve your fitness. What features, if any of these, Apple might include in the iWatch or other wearable tech remains to be seen. Disclosure: Fitbit is backed by True Ventures, a venture capital firm that is an investor in the parent company of this blog, Giga Omni Media. Om Malik, founder of Giga Omni Media, is also a venture partner at True. Related research
