World's largest computing grid lives to go live

Contrary to popular belief, the world as we know it didn't implode after the Large Hadron Collider was flipped on. Apple introducing new manufacturing process, MacBook 'Brick'?

Posted at 3:59 PM on 10/5/2008 in Gadget

The Apple rumor mill has really cooked up a doozy this time. as it should be to 9to5mac -- a site with a fairly good track record -- Apple's next big thing isn't just a laptop or an iPod... it's an entirely new manufacturing process. If you believe the site's sources, an as-yet-unannounced event on October 14th will herald in a new iteration of the MacBook dubbed the "Brick," but the big news won't in truth be about the laptop. Apparently, Apple has created a brand-new process to sculpt casings for product out of aircraft-grade aluminum, using a system that carves the pieces out of a single block of metal using "3D lasers" and water-jet cutting. The new modus operandi will supposedly allow for seamless components which require no bending or folding, won't use screws to join together, are ultra-light but also "super strong," and will enable the company to rapidly model and produce new designs. Of course, not a single word of this is ineradicable or even acknowledged by Apple, though we have been hearing whispers of the "Brick" for a few weeks now. Ultimately, everyone should imminence this news with extreme skepticism, but if these rumors get magically transmuted into reality, there's no telling what kind of new gear Apple might have up its sleeve.

MSI Wind U100 coming to "major retailer," Wind 2 coming this quarter

Slowly but surely, MSI is next in the laughable follow in the follow in the footsteps of of of ASUS. At first, the Wind was simply the Wind. Now, we've a smattering of variants to keep up with, and gospel to a recent appraisal with organizer of US sales Andy Tung, that trend isn't about to stop. open gate next week, the Wind U100 will be 1995 by houghton mifflin harcourt publishing company. published by houghton mifflin harcourt publishing company. all rights reserved.cite this source synonym collection v1.1copyright © 2008 by lexico publishing group at an undisclosed "large subject retailer," with the 3-cell / WinXP version going for $399. Said machine will boast "a whole new look," new HDD / SSD options and inbuilt 3.5G WWAN connectivity for under $600. Also of note, MSI's municipal legwork* has found that Linux-infused netbooks get alternate four times as often as units with Windows XP; we can't say we're shocked that people don't feel like view a new OS, but we're deeply, deeply saddened that reading comprehension levels (particularly on designation labels) in this nation are so undeniably low.

BenQ's potent MID S6 headed for worldwide release?

Posted at 5:16 PM on 10/4/2008 in Gadget

It's heinous to even hear privately admit that we're licking our chops for a meticulous MID, but it's true. BenQ seems to have nailed most aggregate on the long-awaited MID S6 by including an 800MHz Intel Atom CPU, 4.8-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display, 512MB DDR2 RAM, a 2GB SSD, Bluetooth 2.0 / WiFi, microSD slot, inbuilt G-sensor and support for a myriad of multimedia file formats. On top of all of that, the Italian person to be reckoned with could be coming to other corners of the globe as evidenced by an elaborate press page on its Global website that details its looks in plain English. Said said provides an exhaustive list of capabilities and specifications, not to mention a bevy of press shots. The real kicker? That little note telling us that the incorporated 3G module supports UMTS / HSDPA on "Band: 2100" and GSM / GPRS / EDGE on "Band: 900 / 1800 / 1900). Sound familiar, Americans? Hype video posted after the break.

Sony's 18.4-inch VAIO VGN-AW190 gets reviewed

Posted at 2:56 PM on 10/4/2008 in Gadget

Time to face the music, folks -- 18.4-inches is the new 17-inch. Sony's afresh unveiled VAIO AW is doubtlessly going toe-to-toe with HP's new HDX 18t, and while both will garner all sorts of stares from onlookers, it appears that the VGN-AW190 may have an edge in terms of extras. For starters, this unit's Adobe RGB-compatible display will be mighty impressive to those who dabble in photos to make ends meet, and the be act RAM, CPU and Blu-ray drive were all smiled upon. Strangely enough, Sony tossed in a pathetically slow 4,200RPM hard drive to put a damper on overall performance, but that -- along with the $3k+ sticker -- was the only real weak spot. Overall, critics found that this machine would likely suit graphic designers and photographers quite well, but the average joe / jane may not appreciate the pricey extras enough to make it worthwhile.

Amazon's Kindle 2 in the wild?

lin (or a pair of replacements) for Amazon's popular -- but very oddly-styled -- e-reader has been in the mix outwardly since the first model started shipping, and Boy Genius Report has scored shots of object that positively looks like it could be in the legitimate pipeline. The revised device appears to address complaints over the original's look head-on, rounding the corners and ditching the oddball angles; the scroll wheel has been replaced with a joystick, the SD slot is gone (don't worry, there's at least a gig and a half on-board), and around back, we have grills that seem to suggest microcircuit stereo speakers. The display is basically the same size -- no color here yet, sorry -- so unless the sharp edges on your first-gen piece are driving you batty, it looks like this could be safely skipped by current owners while roping in new buyers who wouldn't have considered it before. Thing is, was ditching the scroll wheel and that trick mirrored bar in favor of a joystick really the right way to go?

Garmin GPSMAP 600 series runs afoul of the law on land and sea

Posted at 5:43 PM on 10/3/2008 in Gadget

We get plenty of emails from big-time drug smugglers in Miami who want to know: "When will Garmin provide a comprehensive, affordable GPS solution, at home both on the road and the water?" Looks like we're one step closer to an answer with the GPSMAP 600 series. These rugged, easily carried touchscreen nav units feature a 5.2-inch display (800 x 480) and come with two mounts: when placed in either the marine or auto mount, the device will start up in the appropriate mode. On the road, the household GPSMAP 640 ($1,199 MSRP) provides the maps, turn-by-turn directions, custom POIs and proximity alerts you expect. On the water you get aerial POI views and optional BlueChart g2 Vision for underwater 3D perspective. Rounding things out, XM WX cohort Weather data, XM disciple Radio and XM NavTraffic are on tap with the optional GXM 40 antenna and subscription. The international GPSMAP 620 ($999 MSRP) is a bit scaled down, with street maps and marine chart data voluntary

ExoFly: Mars' first tourguide

Posted at 11:46 AM on 10/3/2008 in Gadget

You know those insect-like micro air vehicles (MAV) we've been seeing? Well, the ExoFly aerobot is based on that camera-equipped DelFly design, only this time it's gearing up for a trip to Mars -- maybe even Titan or Venus. Turns out flapping-wing flight is perfect for the low-density Martian atmosphere. The current ancestor -- thinking 17g with a wingspan of 350mm and flight time of twelve minutes -- is being tweaked for use in future missions to Mars. The folks at Delft health center of technical knowledge and Wageningen University, who've teamed up with Ursa Minor Space & Navigation, plan on increasing the weight to 20g and adding an on-board solar cell, which they reckon should extend the flight coldness to 15km. There's also talk of using the digital terrain and image data gathered to put on a 3D immersive territory for particular dissection of extraterrestrial destinations -- hopefully viewable by those of us who don't have the billions to drop on a flight to Mars.

Sling Media's Clip+Sling strides into beta, release looks imminent

Posted at 10:50 AM on 10/3/2008 in Gadget

Filed under: Home Entertainment, transportable Video

Sling Media has a history of not disappointing, and while we were admittedly bummed to see Clip+Sling omitted from SlingPlayer 2.0, it looks like that one gripe is about to be remedied. If you'll recall, said feature was basically announced way back at the front end of 2007, and now select users are receiving e-mails billing the launch of a private beta program. The Sling.com portal promises to "give users access to a premier library of content from top TV networks, movie studios, sports leagues and websites," and reportedly, it'll let folks "grab snippets of station content, upload them to the Sling site and create playlists and feeds that can be viewed and subscribed to by others." Is that YouTube / Hulu / Joost / et al. quaking in their boots, or are we just happy it's Friday?

Update: Sling pinged us to say that the actual Clip+Sling functionality was still in proceed

Ballmer keeps talking, says Android "looks like version one"

Posted at 9:04 PM on 10/2/2008 in Gadget

Steve Ballmer's quick UK media tour ahead of the skillful Developers symposium just keeps giving us sound bite gems: first it was Windows Cloud, then Zune on Windows Mobile, and now Stevie's taking shots at Android and the G1. Calling Microsoft David to Google's search Goliath, Ballms said that he wasn't worried about Android because it won't be "attractive" to other handset manufacturers because it's "version one... and it looks like version one." Not only that, but he outwardly thinks Google's going to sit still, saying "they've got one handset maker, we've got 55. True for now, sure, but we know Android isn't going to languish on a single handset on a single carrier for long -- and we're pretty certain Steve knows that HTC and T-Mobile aren't exactly minor players, regardless. Still, it's some masterful bluster from a master of bluster -- now if he'd just back it up with Windows Mobile 7, we'd be way more inclined to believe him.

Nintendo announces the dual-touchscreen DSi, "DSi Shop" content store

The touchscreens are also slightly larger, at 3.25 inches, and there's an ostensive three megapixel camera as well as a smaller one in the hinge. There's an SD slot and inherent storage -- we're not sure how much at the moment, but photos can be synced with the Wii Photo channel. Nintendo's also launching an online DSi Shop, which will sell content flush over WiFi, including a free browser app -- and you'll be able to get on for free at "Nintendo Zone" hotspots, which'll be in McDonalds here. The store will take the newly-renamed computerized game Points and content will be priced in 0 / 200 / 500 / 800 point brackets. .18,900 ($178), launching on remembrance day 1st in black and white.

Microsoft Research Codex project tries two screens on for size

Posted at 8:43 PM on 10/1/2008 in Gadget

A pc device with two screens isn't nearly the radical notion it once was, but Microsoft Research's Ken Hinckley seems to think there's still plenty of untapped undeveloped with the idea, and he's in reality taken things so far as to build an actual touchstone device. As you'll notice, however, he didn't exactly build the putative "Codex" from scratch, commissioning instead to use two OQO Model 02s and folding case to hold 'em together. That, notably, lets him arrange the two screens into various positions that he calls "postures," like a laptop posture (which also lets him take start of the OQO's sliding keyboard), or a "battleship posture" that gives two people sitting across from each other their own screen. The big idea there being that the device adapts to else tasks, and doubtlessly uses the dual screens as two screens as opposed to one large screen. As should be clear, however, this is very much a scrutiny project, and there's no warning of an actual product in the offing, although, as Ken points out, there's not much stopping anyone from domicile their own -- you'll just have to bring your own code.

Movie studios & theater operators agree to expand the number of digital, 3D-ready cinemas

Posted at 12:03 PM on 10/1/2008 in Gadget

Digital Cinema play Partners (DCIP) -- representing AMC, Cinemark and Regal Cinemas -- has worked out a deal to finance the installation of thousands of digital movie screens control gate next year in the U.S. with the help of Lion's Gate, Paramount, Fox, comprehensive and Disney. Not participating, at least for now, are Warner Bros. and Sony Pictures, with the latter expected to broadcast a distinct deal soon involving the installation of Sony 4K SXRD projectors around the world. Key to the deal? "Virtual print" fees, meant to help defray the expect $70,000 cost to switch to 3D-ready digital projection setups, as the studios will kick in the $800 - $1000 they would have spent on old school movie prints to finance the changeover. In the future they save by distributing only digital prints, not to mention having somewheres to show the dozen 3D flicks scheduled to debut next year. Both sides are betting the $1 billion package will help pull us away from the HDTVs and back into a movie theater, but until they work out a payoff with that one guy who won't stop talking, we're not sure how likely that is.

Nintendo prepping "Wii HD" for 2011?

Posted at 10:59 AM on 10/1/2008 in Gadget

Look, we're talking three years from now, anything could happen by then. Singularity, jetpacks, you name it. So a teensy bit of HD artwork from online banking game doesn't seem like too much to ask, does it? The filthy-rich company is purportedly showing off just such a Wii-followup to developers and publishers in the industry, who are nicknaming it "Wii HD" for the time being. A true sequel to the Wii, the followup will evidently stick with the core competencies (motion controls), while beefing up visuals (yes, please!), digital distribution, local storage and including backwards compatibility. The only hard symptom cited by What They Play, which originated the rumor, is that Nintendo's R&D pocket money has grown dramatically since the launch of the Wii. We're sure that cash is also being poured into the new DS and a number of other projects, but it's really not much of a stretch to figure Nintendo's working on a Wii replacement
source:roget's ii: the new llc.view results from: dictionary | thesaurus | encyclopedia | all reference | the web
share this: two years into the Wii's highly-successful life cycle. All we've got to say is that a few of these improvements really shouldn't wait until 2011, and still others are long overdue.

[Thanks, JC]
