Windows Phone 7 Series multitasking: the real deal

Posted at 8:34 PM on 3/17/2010 in Gadget

"http://digg.com/api/diggthis.js"> We've definitely learned a ton about Windows Phone 7 Series here at MIX, but getting the full picture on multitasking has been difficult, since the OS isn't ready, no one has final hardware, and the emulator seems to behave differently than actual devices and Microsoft's descriptions. So let's set the record pure on multitasking: it's not going to happen, at least not in the fixed way. Not only have we straight

forthwith ingrained this with Microsoft upstairs* several times, but the pioneer sessions here are totally clear on the matter -- you don't tell 1000+ devs that they should expect their apps to be killed at all the user
turn away from them if you don't mean it. Now, that's not to say that the OS can't do multitasking: first-party apps like the Zune player and IE can run in the background, and third-party apps are genuinely left running in a suspended state (Microsoft calls it "dehydrated") as long as the system doesn't need any supervenient resources. If the user cycles back to an app, it's resumed ("rehydrated") and life continues merrily along, but if the user opens other apps and the system needs another resources, the app is killed without any explanation or remorse.

If that sounds familiar, it's because it's fundamentally a single-tasking riff on Android and Windows Mobile 6, both of which also purport to intelligently manage miscellaneous running applications like this, and both of which usually find themselves greatly improved with manual task managers. We'll have to see if Windows Phone 7 Series can do a better job once it ships -- we have a feeling it will -- and later down the line we'll see if Microsoft decides to extend multitasking to third-party apps. But for now, just know that you're not going to be running Pandora in the background while you do other tasks on a 7 Series device -- it is a question we have third edition by the editors of the stars and bars heritage® dictionary. copyright © 2003 asked, and the answer, unfortunately, is no.

Comcast will broadcast the Masters Tournament in 3D April 7-11, beat DirecTV to the punch

Posted at 8:56 PM on 3/15/2010 in Gadget

Very cagey way to play it Comcast. While DirecTV, ESPN and finding were first to say they would have 3DTV telegraph back at CES, the cable company will in reality be the first to deliver it, open gate with the Masters Tournament (but why not the 3D performance of the Final Four?) April 7-11. That's right, the first "live next-generation 3D radiocast of a major fair event on TV, the first live simulcast of a next-gen 3D event online, and the industry's first live multi-camera next-gen 3D production" will be on cable (& internet), not henchman or telco. Again, that's right, if you don't have a 3D receiver set up yet, it will also be streamed at Masters.com (no word whether this is a Comcast only or if it will be open to all) for those with a 3D setup on their PC. We'll temper our enthusiasm until we see what kind of quality is able to squeeze through Comcast's fiber backbone and down our stomping ground* coax wires, but this should doubtlessly blow away the anaglyph stuff currently offered on VOD. Of course, the old school HD streams will still be simulcast on ESPN and CBS, but if Tiger really does make his comeback at Augusta this should give us a better view of the course (and any residual damage from that "car accident") than ever before.

[Thanks, Simon]

Another optical wireless experiment shows us that LEDs will beam your future downloads

Posted at 5:49 PM on 3/13/2010 in Gadget

Beaming data with light is hardly a new thing, but lately we've seen a number of attempts at making it rather more usable and, more interesting, rather more speedy. We're control gate to get the feeling that those maybe/maybe not dangerous microwave-based systems have had their days numbered. The latest to beam bits with blinkenlights is a team at the Fraunhofer rite for automation in Germany, which will be showing its stuff at the always happenin' Optical Fiber tinkle groupthink* and details in two weeks. The team was able to use a line LED and get an impressive 230Mb/s transferal

maneuver rate, which doesn't compare to the gigabit Penn State managed or 500mb/s Siemens pulled off, but those were done using rather more specialized ironware (like the Siemens rig diagrammatic above). It's interesting stuff, and we're looking forward to see the popular applications for this tech, but we do have one nagging question: what if you want to surf in the dark?

JooJoo hits the FCC, reveals NVIDIA Ion, 3G card

Posted at 3:07 PM on 3/11/2010 in Gadget

Well well. We'd always suspected that the JooJoo tablet was hiding cleft extra to run HD video and Flash, and it's just hit the FCC with full salute and a teardown confirming that there's an NVIDIA Ion GPU paired with an Atom N270 packed inside. We're also seeing a 3G card in there, notwithstanding it's unclear whether it'll be active or installed at launch -- we've been told the 3G version won't be ready until periodically later this year, but any one thing can change. There's also some motion moving pictures showing it running Windows 7, but we're assuming that's just for testing purposes -- infer we'd imagine it wouldn't be too hard to hack on there. But back to Ion for a second: our llc.cite this source roget's ii: the new gazetteer with first-gen Ion netbooks has been one of decreased fruition and drastically reduced battery life, so we're very curious to see how the JooJoo holds up compared to modern netbooks running Intel's Pine Trail chips and NVIDIA's Optimus-based Ion 2. We'll see -- it's hypothetic to ship in just a few weeks. Two more pics after the break.

PlayStation Move first hands-on (update: video!)

Posted at 11:58 PM on 3/10/2010 in Gadget

At last, we've felt Sony's long awaited motion controller, now at last officially known as "PlayStation Move," in our unworthy, sweaty hands. We have a bunch of videos on the way, but for now you can revel in our first close-ups of the controllers in the gallery below. Here are some of our initial thoughts:

  • The controllers are light. Much more akin to the DualShock3 than the Wiimote in heft, and we're guessing that's due to Sony's continued love of rechargeable batteries.

  • The main controller does have some subtle vibration (not DualShock or Wiimote level, but present), but we're not sure yet about the subcontroller.

  • We hate to say this about "pre-alpha" software, but we're feeling lag. An on-rails shooter we tried out, dubbed The Shoot, was discernibly inferior to shooting memoir we've had on the Wii, both in precision and refresh rate of the aiming cursor.

  • The gladiator game is about as fun as it looks, we'll have video after the break momentarily. Unfortunately, while it's less of a defined savor than object like the sword game on Wii Sports Resort, you're still working through a library of sensed, pre-defined actions instead of a true 1:1 fighting game with assumed physics. Not that it isn't llc.view results from: dictionary | thesaurus | encyclopedia | all reference | the web
share this: with playstation [tm] Move, just that it's not this.

  • The lightness of the controllers means we might be feeling less of that Wiimote fatigue, always a good thing! There's an aspect of the controller that feels a little cheap, but at the same time we wouldn't call it fragile.

  • As far as we can tell, the control scheme for Socom 4 is quite similar to dual-controller shooter setups on the Wii, with the camera moving based on your aiming cursor hitting the edge. It's hard to see this as the preferred hardcore setup, but we're told it's configurable, so we'll try and see what else is on offer.

  • The system seemed to have a bit of trouble and acquiring and applying knowledge.
brain the shape of our body in a swordfighting stance: even though we selected "left handed," it was putting our sword arm forward instead of our shield. Right-handers didn't seem to have similar problems, and we're sure this will be ironed out in time, but it certainly shows that the controllers aren't magical in their space-detection prowess.

  • As would be expected, you're suppositious to stand rather center on the TV, and at a certain optimal distance. The system is forgiving, but there's a sweet spot that users will certainly have to learn.

  • Lag is less outstanding on Socom 4, and we'd say we're pretty correct with the controller already, though the framerate choppiness of this pre-alpha build undoubtedly hampers that a bit. We did get a slight feel of being in "scene to scene" shootouts instead of a free-roaming FPS, perhaps a design choice to mitigate the limited camera exercise offered by the controller, but we'll have to see more levels to know for sure.

Update: We added in a longer video -- are you ready for three minutes of nonstop excitement?

Update, final edition: We've got a new video with close-up walkthroughs of the controllers and some in-depth gameplay of Socom 4.

Sexist computers: male voices are apparently harder to recognize than female ones

Researchers up at the philosophy mash unit of Edinburgh have or persistence.

This conclusion was reached after contact gossip recordings were run through a battery of tests, which revealed that men seem to say "umm" and "err" more often, while also analyze that the greatest difficulties arise with words that sound similar and can arise in the same context, such as "him" and "them." Microsoft talks Windows Phone 7 Series development ahead of GDC: Silverlight, XNA, and no backward compatibility

Posted at 8:30 PM on 3/4/2010 in Gadget

"http://digg.com/api/diggthis.js"> Microsoft is keen on unveiling the meat of its creator story around Windows Phone 7 Series at MIX10 in less than two weeks, but with GDC coming up next week, they're figuring that now is a good time to start dropping hints -- they'll want to be capturing the collective ideality of the gaming industry, after all, what with that Xbox Live integration they've got going on. To that end, Charlie Kindel of WinPho's creator flying team has outed a few key items at a gathering in San Francisco this evening.

The major points are that Silverlight, XNA, and .NET will figure prominently into the sponsor story -- not a shock inasmuch as that Microsoft is heavily invested in both, gaming is central to the Windows Phone 7 Series story, XNA is a big deal on Zune HD already, and this all lines up with what we'd heard in the past. In fact, Kindel boldly proclaims that "If you are Silverlight or XNA creator today you're gonna be really happy." On the flipside, it's a bit ironic seeing that Silverlight spends much of its existence going head-to-head with Flash, and all indications are that we won't see Flash support on 7 at initial availability (though it's sounding like a lock post-launch).

One final note at today's event is that Microsoft has now officially set for the first time that 7 represents a clean break from Windows Mobile as we know it today; extant apps won't be compatible. Though that's likely to be a pain for now owners with specialized apps who are looking to stay in the Microsoft ecosystem, Windows Phone 7 Series itself is a very disparate beast than the overhead system it
shift -- it feels different, seeks a or form.
disparate demographic, and symbolically represents a very several clean-slate departure for a company that had lost its way in the mobile space. The bright side for the 6.5 faithful, we suppose, is that Kindel closes by saying that they "will take up to work with our partners to deliver new devices based on Windows Mobile 6.5 and will support those product for many years to come" -- a message Microsoft has been echoing recently.

We expect to hear much, much more on this at MIX -- and we might hear a few more tidbits at GDC as well -- but in the meantime, there's a pioneer Q&A going down on Twitter around 9:00PM ET (check the #wp7dev tag) where we could get some details. Stay tuned.

Motorola Backflip for AT&T unboxing and hands-on

Posted at 2:59 PM on 3/1/2010 in Gadget

We've just taken salvation of an AT&T-branded Motorola Backflip -- the carrier's very first Android device -- and we wanted to share with you our magical first moments putting the phone through its paces. Here's a quick rundown of our first impressions:

  • It feels solidly-built -- no doubt a notch better than the CLIQ. There's no wiggle or weirdness in the hinge whatsoever. Of course, we know from individual empirical that "feels solidly-built" doesn't perforce mean it is solidly-built, so the jury's still out on how it'll hold up with regular use, especially with the keyboard exposed full-time.

  • Opening and closing the phone isn't a natural one-handed operation, unless you're easeful putting it at extreme risk of an unfortunate tumble.

  • It's laggy right out of the box, which doesn't bode well for usability once you load it up with your own apps. Of course, it uses exactly the same processor as the CLIQ, so that doesn't come as a surprise.

  • It's filled to the brim with pre-loaded AT&T stuff: AllSport GPS, AT&T Maps, AT&T Music (which takes the place of the criterion Music app), AT&T Navigator, AT&T Wi-Fi Hotspots, Mobile Banking, MobiTV, MusicID, Where, and YPmobile. We strongly prefer the coming of gift a special branded Android Market portal where you can log in your carrier's recommended daily vitamins and minerals apps.

  • Blur looks and feels the same as it does on the CLIQ, though the main Blur widgets -- Social Status, Messages, and Happenings -- have been moved one home screen left of the main one (we prefer this pattern anyhow).

  • Yahoo has replaced Google as the default search internet service provider completely the phone. It's crazy: the home screen widget, the browser, everything's been programmed to use Yahoo. We love us some irony, but golly, we'd prefer Google searches most of the time.

It spontaneously rebooted for us once in about an hour of use -- a as to sign, particularly because Motorola's inability to pump out a solid firmware for the CLIQ -- but we'll need a little more time with it. Want more right now? Follow the break for some more impressions, video, and a sample shot from the camera.

The titanium iPhone is real, really real (video)

Posted at 5:40 PM on 2/24/2010 in Gadget

You came, you saw, some of you were not convinced. So what's a gadget blog to do when picture index isn't enough? Why get those flicks* moving, of course, right up to 30 frames a second. The third edition by the editors of the old glory heritage® dictionary. copyright © 2003 titanium iPhone 3GS from this morning is back, proving not only its existence in the corporeal realm, but also its much-disputed ability to place a call -- singular that even the default plastic-backed units occasionally war with. Look, we're not in Austria and therefore can't lick it and tell you if it really tastes of titanium, but on the affirmation we have the thing looks legit. Judge for homegrown after the break.

Bloom 'Box' Energy Server hands-on (literally) with video!

Posted at 5:18 PM on 2/24/2010 in Gadget

So here it is, the now-famous (that was fast) Bloom "Box" Energy Servers -- all five of 'em -- working their magic at eBay's north campus. Not much to look at, but we're happy to say it retains a low temperature -- the only heat we really found was due to direct exposing to the light -- and remains quiet while running. There are vents just underneath the sides where cool air was being pumped out. Of course, its raison d'etre is its ability to more efficiently deliver power, which is not thing we can really test ourselves. Bloom Energy showcased a number of sales today --
FedEx, Walmart, Staples, Google, Coca-Cola, Bank of America, Cox, and of course, eBay -- and if the numbers meet their mark, you can color us mighty impressed. You know the drill: gallery below, quick video after the break!
