11/23/2005 - Auto Coverages, What?

I think I did well enough on Test 1 (definitions, coverages, underwriting guidelines).  I needed an 80% or better, but I won't get the results back until next week.  I was thinking I'd be stressing over my grade all over the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend (since I have Friday off as well), but I'm actually pretty cool about it.  "Confident" would be a better word to describe it.

We started learning State Specifics today for Auto Insurance.  NY was the main one we went over.  PA was a lot shorter, probably because we learned all the basics while learning NY.  I actually brought my auto policy with me (PAP) from Liberty Mutual to have an easy reference while learning about the coverages and state specifics.  In ways it helped, and in ways it made me realize how much of an idiot I was when I first got my coverages!

Well, maybe I wasn't an idiot, just ignorant.  I will go into some detail for you... I hope it's not too dry.  Mainly, because it will help me learn what I need to learn by trying to explain it on here.

Section A of a policy is liability.  Bodily Injury and Property Damage coverage is required in all states.  This is coverage that the Insured will pay out to a 3rd party if the Insured is legally liable for the accident.  My policy covers $50,000 per person in bodily injury up to $100,000 per accident (no matter how many people are injured) and up to $50,000 in property damage per accident (ex. the 3rd party's vehicle damage or fence replacement if I hit their fence).

My Personal Injury Protection (PIP) covers my injuries/medical expenses (and anyone in my vehicle) in an accident regardless of who is at fault.  This also covers wage loss and replacement services up to the basic limit of $50,000 per person.  The death benefit is $2,000.  I also elected to add additional coverage for medical payments (Med Pay) at $5,000.  I have Supplementary Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (SUM) coverage at the same splits for Bodily Injury ($50/100) that covers my bodily injury where the 3rd party was at fault in the accident and they either did not have insurance coverage or not enough coverage to pay for my medical bills.  This coverages carries over even outside of NY state.

Section B houses the Physical Damage portion of my policy.  This is the section that deals with coverage to my vehicle.  My Comprehensive (other than collision) deductible is $250.  I have full glass coverages, so no deductible would be charged for the windshield/glass replacement on my vehicle if it is a comp claim.  My Collision deductibe is $500.  This deductibe cannot be lower than my comprehensive deductible.

I also have Towing and Labor at $50 per disablement (if it is a covered disablement).  Rental Reimbursement/Extended Transportation Expense is automatically included with my comprehensive insurance at $30 per day and up to $900 a month if I need to rent a replacement vehicle if mine is the repair shop due to a covered loss.

This is pretty good coverage, but with how sue happy people are in the US... it makes me want to up my Bodily Injury limits to at least $100/300 and my SUM to the same.  Incase I sustain any major injuries or those people in my vehicle, I would want to up my PIP coverage to also include out of state guests in my vehicle if I drive them out of state (buying above the basic PIP levels), buy more MedPay, and possibly $25k in Optional Basic Economic Loss coverage (only available in NY) so I could choose how I spent that coverage.  OBEL works like PIP, only I get to choose how my bills will get paid (ex. work loss first, then medical bills).

Enough of this crap.  My daughter just got home.  I need to go get my 100mg Zoloft from CVS and spend some time with my family.  Enough work today.  Time to enjoy the little bit of 'family' time I have!

Remember, you only live life once.  Don't spend it all working.  You'll miss out on the important stuff at home.
