Well, we've just survived a major flood in the Greater Binghamton area... (and surrounding areas). The overflow continued into PA following the Susquehanna, Chenengo, and Deleware Rivers naturally. I wanted to include some photos borrowed from the local newspaper: www.pressconnects.com whom has the complete story coverage. Just for reference, I live off Court Street. I tried to label the pictures as acurately as possible. If you're interested in reading about the devistation, I would encourage you to check out the link to our local newspaper. Luckily, we did not have any flood damage at the home I rent. Just 3 blocks away is the Susuehanna River and Court Street. Luckily, Baby O and I were at a safe enough distance from the flooding waters. Others were not so lucky. These pictures are from Wednesday, June 28, 2006.

I know a lot of people at work were complaining because we had to be in at 1pm on Thursday. I had lost a vacation day for Wednesday due to my retinal specialist appointment and AIG ended up closed for the day due to the devistation. I know most people would be upset because they 'lost' a vacation day since both my appointment and workplace were both closed due to the flooding; however, I'm just glad I have a home. So many people were upset due to the fact that they had to report to work Thursday when the city is still recovering, but I was glad for the opportunity to be able to get out. The state of emergency was lifted in Broome County and I was pleased. It is sad that people don't have homes to go back to, but it's even worse when people who are 'unaffected' by the flooding can have such a negative attitude. I'll give up my parking space or drive a little slower because of the congestion due to the damages and closed/detoured roads. I feel blessed for being so close and not having to live through the horror of losing everything. |
