3/7/2008 - Food Poisoning 101 turns to Acute Pancreatitis

Recap without too much hellish detail...

Saturday had Tai Chi. Made me a turkey sandwhich about 2 or 2:30pm and took a nap with the kids. Woke up at 3:30 with severe stomach cramps and vomitted. Thought I had food poisoning, horrible stabbing pains and cramps in my upper abdomin and diarriah. Turkey was the only thing I ate that Liv didn't eat that day, had to be it.

Cramps kept coming and going, spreading to my back. started getting fevorish and Ibuprophen didn't help. Theraflu helped with the fevor. Suffered with the one and offness of the cramps until Monday evening. After work Monday cramping got so severe I couldn't sit up. Couldn't lay down. Huddled myself and squeezed my stomach/upper abdomin which was highly sensitive. Felt like fainting and felt super dehydrated. Pepto didn't help and Sis was on her way.

Ya-Yiel watched the kids and Bob and Bubba shortly joined her while Sis took me to the ER. Waited there from 10:45pm Monday evening 3/3/08 to Tuesday 3/4/08 approx 5:10am when the ER doctor finally came in and opted to admit me. Had blood drawn and they put me on an IV. Told me then it was prolly gall stones that cause pancreatitis. I was in so much pain when I went to hospital I couldn't even sit in a chair. I huddled on the floor, hand and head over my puke bucket, while I knelt on the floor. Intense pain until my stomach was emptied. I had had enough dry heaving at home and was so faint, having trouble breathing and it took them that long to get me the medical assistance I needed.

Ugh. Not good news. Just started my new job. 1 wk into training and I'm on Step1. Can't be sick for a full year without a 10 day suspension now. This sucks.

Turns out I also had jaundice because I had 3 teams of doctors to deal with for the week. The GI doctors, the surgeons, and the Liver specialist. All seemed to be fighting over what step to do when with which procedure. I was NPO, then I was allowed clear liquids only. then I could eat, then NPO again. It was driving me crazy. I didn't care if I wasn't in pain. Can I tell you the Hopsital meds are so nice to take away the pain. It's the pushing on my abdomin that hurt. Exams all the time, vital checks every 4 hours. I needed to get out of there. At least they took good care of me. Nurses and Aides were friendly. Surgeon has me scheduled for Outpatient surgery Monday to have my gall bladder removed. Had a gall stone that I passed that cause my jaundice and pacreatitis. I have more gall stones so they want to remove my gall bladder.

It's been hard on me. Hard on my kids. Hard on my family. I didn't think I was as sick as I was. Didn't realize how serious my illness could have been and how bad it had gotten. I was lucky. Lucky I got there when I did. Was told I should have come when it all started Saturday, but having no health insurance right now was the critical key. Having just started a new job and not wanting to miss any time for fear that I'd lose my new opportunity was also another critical key.

I'm greatful for my family. For my support. For your love. I will keep you abreast of my surgery and my health.
