As the summer winds down, it’s time to talk fire safety once again. Masterguard has been providing fire and carbon monoxide safety products since 1971, and is an expert in the field of fire safety. The simple fact of the matter is that fires can happen anywhere and to anyone. In fact, according to the National Fire Protection Association, fire is the third leading cause of accidental death with residential fires accounting for more than 80 percent of deaths from fire. Sometimes having a smoke detector is just not good enough. You need a whole fire protection system and an evacuation plan in the event of a fire. Remember, fire can break out at any time, so the plan should be one you can ideally run in the middle of the night, half awake, if that is when the fire happens. Remember, 1.5 million Americans are injured by fire every year. Inspect your home carefully for areas that are or can be a fire danger. Masterguard says to pay special attention to faulty wiring and overloaded circuits. Old and worn out wiring is dangerous , it is important to have any electrical system more than twenty years old inspected and ensure it is both safe and up to current fire and safety codes. Another thing that is at risk of causing a fire is overloaded circuits. In our electronic age, people plug in appliances and other electrical equipment and don’t give it another thought. This is dangerous as you should always be aware of the power load of all of the appliances hooked up to one circuit. It is imperative that the capacity of the circuit is never exceeded. One way to tell if your circuits are overloaded is when a home has problems with lights dimming and fuses blowing. It may surprise you to hear that the United States has one of the highest fire death rates in the industrialized world. The leading cause of death in children is death by fire in the home. Masterguard wants you to make sure to check the batteries in your smoke detectors and replace them frequently. Sit your family down and explain what to do in the event of fire. Make sure you account for all pets in your fire plan as well. It would be tragic to get the human members of the family out only to discover your tabby cat Fluffy is still trapped inside. By thinking ahead and making a plan as well as fire proofing your home as much as you can, you will up your family’s chances of being one of the lucky ones who never experience a home fire.
