Nowadays we have 2 types of poker games, one that has been played for hundreds of years now, and one that has only recently been created. In poker, 5 cards are used in the game. The players have to wager on the person who is holding the most valued combination of cards. Typically more than two players are involved in poker. A player can either bet or raise the stake. Let us take a look at the history of poker and then we move on to the history of online poker too.

There have been different stories about the origin of name of Poker. However, the origin is still not certain. Two main conceptions are that either this name came from a German game “pochspiel” or from a French game “Poque”. Some people assert that it comes from a Hindu word and some say that it developed from term hocus pocus.

Bluffing is a common strategy in poker games. A player holding a set of cards will never expose them to others and will pretend to have different cards than they actually have. This is called bluffing.

Online poker has existed for just over 10 years. It was 1998 when the first game of poker came online, although 2002 is considered as the milestone year in poker history. Just after one year, the World Poker Tour was launched on the Travel Channel in the US and that was when online poker gained mainstream popularity. There was a tournament for online poker as well that was held in 2003 and it provided wildly popular. Due to its availability and competitions it became more popular among individuals and more people started getting into the game. There was a time when poker was played exclusively in casinos but now, due to the boom in poker popularity, you can play this game from your own home.

When online poker began in the late 1990s, there were so many drawbacks in the game that have since been worked out. Nowadays, there are thousands of websites offering online poker games. All that you need to do is become a member at once of these sites. This membership is almost always free. People from around the world visit these gambling websites to play poker and you can too.
