1/6/2017 - Hollywood's superheroes, family fare boosted by China in 2016


By Lisa Richwine LOS ANGELES - China's moviegoers embraced big-screen superheroes, cartoon animals and a video game-turned-action flick in 2016, adding $1.8 billion in ticket sales to Hollywood's 20 highest-grossing films of the year. The numbers illustrate China's growing importance to U.S. studios such as Walt Disney Co's Disney Studios, Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. and Comcast Corp's unlimited Pictures. While China's booming box office growth stalled this year in single digits, the country remains vital for Hollywood studios, box office analysts said.

Acclaimed Indian actor Om Puri, familiar abroad for his role in hit movie Gandhi, died aged 66 after difficulty a heart attack Friday, reports said. The Press Trust of India said Puri had died of a heart attack at his living quarters in Mumbai, the home of Bollywood. Puri made his film debut in a Marathi-language movie in the mid 1970s before going on to star in a number of major Hindi hits as well as, controversially, in some Pakistani movies.

12/31/2016 - Chinese firms ordered to pay Disney, Pixar $194,000 for copying 'Cars': Xinhua

12/24/2016 - A&E network cancels 'Escaping the KKK' documentary over cash payments


The A&E cable eye* network said on handgun it has canceled an approaching documentary about efforts to help Ku Klux Klan members break away from the hate group, after comprehension cash payments were made "to facilitate access" to the film's subjects. The documentary series, "Escaping the KKK," completed after a year and a half in production, was set to showing on Jan. 10 and air in eight parts, capped by a town hall-style special performance on ending hate in America. The decision to scrub the project came shortly after A&E said it had changed the series title to "Escaping the KKK," from "Generation KKK," in order to better reflect that the film was a work of documentary journalism rather than realty-TV entertainment.
