Here we are, the next Monday in February celebrating President's Day. In fact it's George Washington's Birthday we celebrate, that has been February 22, 1732. Abraham Lincoln's birthday was February 12, 1809 although it is near to Washington's dob, it is not a Federal Holiday.
George Washington's birthday was celebrated from the recently formed United States as they was still being alive, however, it wasn't until Chester Arthur signed a bill in 1885 that caused it to be a Federal Holiday.
Since 1888, on February 22, the Senate has celebrated Washington's birthday by reading Washington's Farewell Address. The tradition has roots going back to 1862 if the Address was read as a way to boost morale during the Civil War. Washington stressed the importance of national unity over sectional differences and the address warns of political factionalism, geographical sectionalism and interference by foreign powers.
