The Peppermill Casino in Reno, Nevada is now "The only resort in the United States whose heating source is totally on condition from geothermal energy produced on the proximate property."
That's a pretty impressive statement, but the resort is also proud of the money it will save after investing $9.7 million dollars in the geothermal well pierce and containment system.
I bethink when I was a kid and the Peppermill was a lonely lunchroom out along zigzag fence Street next to the drive-in theater. Pretty soon it added some slot machines and the dingy little motel got some new bed spreads.
You could watch the drive-in movie from some of the rooms, but you had to watch through the bath window. Cool if your were seven or eight years old.
Ten years later the casino added a single 21 table. It was a six-deck shoe and was busy all day. Now the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino mug* 1,635 rooms and suites, two resort pools, 10 restaurants and 16 themed bars and lounges.
Yeah, they have a few more table games and slots now, too - 1,900 slots, 48 table games and a really nice, 19 - table poker room.
As for the greening of the Peppermill, they are deservedly proud to have reduced their carbon footprint by doing a LED and fluorescent retrofit of all the lighting in the resort, removing grass and replacing it with artificial turf, and creating a practically paperless HR department.
Way to go Peppermill!
