11/18/2011 - Getting Started With Your Own Container Garden
Starting a container garden is not as hard as you may think. You can learn some tips and techniques to help you get started right away. A container garden can be indoors, outdoors, or a combination of both. First sit down and make a list of what flowers, or vegetables you would like to have in your garden. Once this is done, you can start on individual plant research.
When starting a container garden you need to know the specifications as to how much root space your plant will need. You can easily find information about all plants and vegetables on the Internet, and see pictures at the same time.
You need to know these specifications in order to select a large enough pot to give the roots room to grow. Herbs can usually be planted in small containers, but if you want to grow potatoes you will need a lot larger pot.
You can also make your container garden pleasing to the eye. You can do this by hanging various plants from the ceiling while placing other pots and containers at different levels in the room.
Think about where your plants are to be located before making container selection. The warmth of the sunlight is important to growing vegetables, so consider this when arranging your garden area. If sunlight is lacking you can purchase grow lights at the hardware store.
Making sure you have proper drainage in your container is a key element. If you need to move the plants in your garden it will be much easier if you use only lightweight containers.
Everything You Need For Your Container Garden
Water
Container gardens require watering several times a day, however too much water will ruin your crop just as easy as under watering. If time is an issue for you just buy a few self watering bulbs at the local hardware store.
Dirt
You need to purchase quality potting soil for vegetables and don't use any soil from outside. Dirt will compact together in the pot and will not let the water drain out. You won't even have to worry about weeds in your garden when you use quality potting soil.
Planters
As mentioned above, all containers need adequate drainage, and you can make many garden containers out of things you have around the house.
On plants that require a large container just remember to water them more often than small pots. A container at least 18" or bigger is the best.
If you plant outside you can place a wooden trellis in the garden to run vines up the wall. Plant something like ivy that will grow up the trellis and you will also have a beautiful privacy fence as well as vegetables in the garden.
Seeds/Plants
Some plants are easier to grow from a baby plant instead of a seed. Bell peppers and tomatoes can be purchased with blooms already on them for faster results.
Proper care is what makes the difference, not whether you start with seeds or plants.
Easiest Vegetables To Get Started
You can plant almost anything in a container garden but below is a list of some of the easiest vegetables to start with.
English peas
spuds
tomatoes
onions
radishes
cucumbers
eggplant
beans
A green thumb is not needed to have a great container garden. Success is just a matter of tending to your garden every single day! You will find that starting your very own container garden to be very rewarding and give you a sense of accomplishment.
