Filipino Citizen
For our PERSEF1 discussion about Filipino Citizen, we were asked to list down the traits (good and bad) of an ordinary Filipino Citizen. Honestly, I was able to write more good traits, I really do appreciate the small acts that define us as Filipinos. Then for our output, we were asked to write about our favorite Filipino Citizen. This was hard, all I could think of were people in the entertainment industry. Then it hit me. Why am I thinking of people who are known and popular? Are they the models of a true Filipino Citizen? So as I continued to think, I thought of my own family, and I found the Filipino Citizen I was looking for. They are actually a group of people, my Favorite Filipino Citizens--OFWs.
Both my parents have been OFWs, and some of my relatives have migrated abroad. I admire my parents as Filipino Citizens because even if they work abroad, they still have that strong sense of nationalism. They make sure that they have a Filipino Channel at home. When we used to live in another country, my parents would always watch the news. They always want to be aware of the happenings in the Philippines. I can still remember when former president Erap Estrada was ousted, we watched in on the news. We ate dinner in front of the TV, and my dad told me "anak panuorin mo ito, history natin 'to". We were also a part of the Filipino Association there. Filipinos would gather and conduct a program, etc. It makes us feel closer to home. Now, when my dad calls me he tells me to watch the news, he always says "manuod ka naman ng news!kailangan mo yan".. I think that one good trait of a Filipino Citizen is the desire to become aware of the economical and political standing of the Philippines. One way of showing love for your country is when you want to be updated with the happenings, it means that you are concerned and that you care. I also admire OFWs who vote abroad when the Philippine elections take place. Despite their absence in the country, they grab the opportunity to choose the person who would be a suitable leader for their country. They want the Philippines to prosper. They still offer what they do for the betterment of our country, the Philippines. I chose the OFWs as my favorite Filipino Citizens for despite their absence in the country, nationalism and the good intentions they have for their country is still present. It would be hard to serve your country when you are working abroad, but that didn't stop them from helping their country. I notice that some OFWs who have decided to stay in the Philippines, start to help their own "barangays" in their little ways. Either they contribute in town projects, etc. They make it a point to always give back to their country. Its as if the Philippines is the parent and us Filipino Citizens are the children. We would want to give pride to our country, we would try to give back to our country for its important role in giving us a sense of belonging.
OFWs are also helping the economy of the country while they are abroad through their remittances. Some OFWs even have rallies or movements against our government while they work abroad. Distance would not hinder them from professing their concern for their country. When OFWs work abroad, its because they look for greener pastures. But unconsciously, they also do this for their country. So that when they come back, they could serve their country better and help improve the unique culture and life it already has.
