8/18/2015 - The trend for regional produce
Posted in Unspecified

The trend for regional produce is here to stay. Especially during the economic crisis, German consumers will want to support their local businesses to keep the employment levels in their region stable. Germans usually feel very connected to the region they live in, and there is a general belief that local produce is of the highest quality. Therefore, regional products are likely to become an essential part of the product ranges offered in German outlets.

Germany’s government is taking the preservation of the environment very seriously, and has taken steps to become the world’s most energy efficient country. Many German households are already recycling their waste, and a number of home owners have installed solar panels on their roof in an attempt to save energy in the long term. Regional products eliminate the need for large delivery distances, thus reducing CO2 emissions, which is very important to Germans.
Some manufacturers, such as Mars and Ferrero, are already combining their deliveries in an attempt to save on logistics costs and preserve the environment. If regional product manufacturers highlight the fact that the products reduce CO2 emissions, their products could become even more popular.
Regional products have significant growth potential. In a survey by Dialego, German consumers criticised supermarkets which have only a limited range of regional produce in their shelves. Around two thirds of Germans would like to see more regional products in the milk, cheese and meat sections.
