Kraut FM

A peeve of mine. It's something to do with the radio. Last night I was trying to listen to one of my favorite radio shows. Sadly, it was a clear night on a summery day, so several radio stations from Germany (NDR 1,2 and 4, WDR 4) repeatedly came thru to block out the radio station I tried to listen to for 15 minutes at a time. They do disappear for upto 15 minutes as well, but it became very annoying. I stuck with trying to listen to what I wanted to hear, because of those intervals when the Germans weren't there, but even then the reception is marred by their static. This happens on any clear night following a hot day, and it starts at 9 PM, and doesn't stop till 7 AM.

You know, if it had been a good radio station, I probably wouldn't have complained about it now, and I might in fact have listened, but NDR 1 which blocked out the radio show I was trying to listen to, is plain rubbish. They only pollute the airwaves with what are called schlagers, wh(more)

If you've been calorie positive integer CNN's polls coverage lately (and we think you have), then you've perchance seen anchor John King tripping the light fantastic on the channel's Magic Wall touchscreen. Apparently, Microsoft has come up with its own version of the board -- fundamentally a Surface flipped on its side and mounted. The device, known as the TouchWall, joins a handful of finger-friendly prototypes that Microsoft scrutiny is working on (including a spherical unit we assume will be used strictly for world domination campaigns). The 4-foot-by-6-foot "wall" uses inexpensive infrared sensors and a rear-mounted camera -- which can be added to a variety of surfaces -- in order to create the hands-on experience. The company appears to be targeting this as a low cost "intelligent whiteboard"(more)

It's been a controversial decision, but it looks like the OLPC XO has completed its transition from revolutionary education project to just another tiny Windows laptop with a useless keyboard -- albeit one with a pleasantly whimsical design. Yep, it's official: Microsoft and OLPC just put out a joint press release saying that XP-loaded XOs will be available open gate in August or September, with some unaligned nations to get the machines as soon as next month. Users will get all the regular functionality of XP -- it's fundamentally the same build as on the Eee and other ultraportables -- but Microsoft's spent over a year third world nation specialized drivers for the XO's various kisser like e-book mode, the writing pad, and camera. (We're pretty certain that doesn't include mesh networking, but WiFi is supported.) Nevertheless, it would be a disservice to you, dear reader, if we let this one slide without comment. The annual Apple touchscreen tablet rumor was given a fresh polish yesterday by Intel's chief German Burgermeister. Hannes Schwaderer stated unequivocally that Apple would be using the new Intel Atom processor in a "future iPhone" which is slightly larger than the existing model due to a larger display. Of course, this isn't the first time that Intel has openly discussed Apple's plans to develop articles based on Intel's Centrino Atom, Mobile online network Device (MID) platform. And as MacRumors and AppleInsider point out, an older rumor calls for a new multi-touch Apple tablet to launc(more)

Well I was close to right. The name of the game I had mentioned in an earlier post is acutally Bonco or Bunco. Though my memory did fail me a bit. It is acutally a dice game not a card game. I decided to do some research upon the game becasue I was currious as to just where it came from and such.

Happy Mother's Day

Mother's Day has come and gone. My children are grown, young adults now, living a life with their significant other. Thus they have to fit two sets of mothers in their plans. My oldest invited me to brunch on Saturday. I sat with my daughter's mother-in-law, a lovely lady, and chatted for two hours. It was a most enjoyable two hours. Food was excellent too.

My youngest invited me to dinner at her home, but unfortunately she got sick and didn't want to give me what ever she had as a mother's day gift. Thank you sweetheart. I didn't want to get sick either. We postponed the dinner for this Sunday. I am a little nervous of meeting her boyfriend's mother. I want to make a good impression. I'm sure it will be fine.

So, on Mother's day I was free to do as I pleased. Something that doesn't come along often enough. My husband, (not the father of my children) felt he should do something for me for Mother's day and took me out to breakfast. At our favorite restaurant, I pic(more)

i just slapped minto in the face! i'm mortified that i did that! i'm so sorry. i hugged him and we both cried. and as you guessed, i didn't have a rest today. i've been going all day.

and not that it gives me any reason to hit my kids, they have been such buggers.

they were jumping on the trampoline in the rain. all wet and soaking. i asked them to come in and clean the table for dinner and get changed and they immediately jumped into a pan of mud up to their ankles.

then they came inside whooting and hollering, stomping up the stairs and running around naked and slamming doors. all while tigerlily had a much needed nap. at first i think, "i'm just going to have dinner by myself right now, while they hold a pow-wow upstairs. but then i thought, "if tigerlily wakes, she's going to be ticked." so i headed upstairs on the warpath. i should have just quieted myself and then calmly headed upstairs...but no.</P(more)

Time Flies when you’re having fun!

Gosh, I just realised it’s been two weeks since my last blog " it’s really flown by! More talk of exams has been buzzing through our house lately, as my son has been doing the dreaded SAT’s. Actually I think a bit the old block has chipped off, because he seems to be one of those people who finds exams easy " he’s got the exam knack. I was going to give him a bit of a boost with a couple of sessions of hypnosis, but in the end I never got around to it, and he was still fine!

The SAT exams have been in the news lately, because of suggestions that UK children are among the most ‘examined in the world’. I’m not sure if that includes China, where the pressure in education from primary to postgraduate seems to be ferocious, if various documentaries are to be believed. However, there is a growing concern in the UK that the frequency and extent of exams in schools are becoming more of a distraction from education than a contributor to it.<(more)

Early Review Calls New Indiana Jones Film Dreadful

Bowman9991 writes "Hope this one isn't true! An early negative review calls the forthcoming "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" movie predictable, lacking in tension, and a fan's worst nightmare. SFFMedia believes this new Indiana Jones movie could create a similar reaction a lot of people practiced after calorie counting the first of the last three Star Wars movies, 'The Phantom Menace': you wait for years and years, the anticipation building, and then it's so awful it taints your view of the original movies. Of course George Lucas was involved with Star Wars too." The SFFMedia piece refers to this review on Ain't it Cool News. The trailer I saw (before Iron Man) in reality looked great to me, so I'm taking this with a grain of salt.

Read more of this story at Slashdot.
