Give the events of the last few days, (the Earthquake in Japan and the ensuing tsunami), many in South Africa have asked if the same could have here to our one and only nuclear power station.
I never cease to be amazed how easily people can be turned in a frenzy by the media. Most never bother to check any 'facts', presented to them.
There is an nuclear incident in Japan, so, in their mind the same could happen in South Africa.
Except that:
-
South Africa is nowhere near a fault line, so a magnitude 8.9 earthquake is somewhat unlikely.
-
Because of where it is located, Tsunamis are also fairly unlikely, (and if they come across from the Atlantic I hope we will have time to prepare for it).
So, assuming the authorities are up to date with the maintenance schedules, and assuming that there is no new fault line appearing 70Km off the coast of Cape Town, I think we are fairly safe.
