5/13/2011 - Elections fever
Posted in Unspecified

We are going to the polls next week, (the 18th), and there is a good feeling about those, pleople expect change.

For me, the good news about those elections is that we get the day off :)

My voting station, (my church), is 2 minutes away from my house. So, all I need to do is get up early, be first in line, and vote. By 8:00am I should be done and able to enjoy my day off with the familly, (I need to check when the polling station open, just to make sure I am not too early).

As in 2009 there are many reports that the ANC might lose some ground and that they might even loose ‘hundreds’ of municipality, they didn'tm the sad reality is that they will not, they will do just as well as they did in the past. For the sake of democracy it would be better if they 'lost' about 10% of their votes.

The main, (and probably only real), issue people have with the ANC is service delivery, they make endless promises with hospitals, garbage removals, new houses, potholes etc, but they never deliver, (and the process is often corrupt anyway). But, it is very hard for anyone to cross the party line, if you always voted for one party you will most likely vote for the same party again and again.

My city, (Durban), is run by the ANC, they are not doing such a bad job, they charge the middle class/rich an absolute fortune to support the poor, (and the poor demand more and more from the city).

I guess that’s the way any society should function, the rich helping the poor, but here, the process itself is not fair, if I don’t pay my electricity I get cut off within a month, no questions asked, but if a poor does not pay, they get it for free, for months on end.
The sanctions for not following the rules are not the same depending where you are in the social ladder, (if you are very rich then you have nothing to worry about, laws simply don’t apply to you).

My local council is run by the DA, and we are very happy with it :).

sorry for itself.
A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough
without ever having felt sorry for itself.
