Today I am truly embarrassed to be South African.
Desmond Tutu invited the Dalai Lama over for his birthday, nothing fairly straight forward you might think. While here, the Dalai Lama was going to do a few other things, (he was meant to have a talk at the university of JHB for example). Obviously, as a foreigner, (and, more importantly, a non head od state), he was asked to apply like a visa, (like any foreigner would, I guess).
And this is where the problems began for the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu, you see China does not like the Dalai Lama very much, and South Africa, (and most of Africa as a matter of fact), is literally selling its soul to China.
So, for the promise of lucrative business deals, South Africa is willing to prostitute itself and its integreity.
Granting the visa to the Dalai Lama is likely to upset China, and if China is upset, the ANC and a select few might loose out in some back-pay.
In any case, the South African government/ANC did not even bother to grant the visa or not, they didn't even have the courtesy of denying it, they just waited and said nothing. So in the end, the Dalai Lama just said, 'no thanks', and withdrew his application altogether.
This is such a shameful behavior, Desmond tutu is livid, (personally I think he is over-reacting a little), I can understand why he is so mad.
The South African government/ANC is so far out of touch with what we, the people of South Africa, want, they will do whatever it takes to make some selected few richer while the vast majority suffers.
Now I ask you, how is this behavior better than the apartheid????
