Asylum By: Serenity Hutchinson It was her silent affirmations that kept her from going completely insane. ‘I will get out. I will get out.’ This was the silent mantra that she told herself every single day. Kate knew that one day she would get out of this terrible place, this place of which consisted of white padded walls and nurses who did not care for her. In St. Luke’s Mental Hospital she was constantly reminded of the past, the past that would never escape her, no matter how far she went. Her mother had put her here after she had been raped by her pedophile uncle. She had been terrified and angry at the same time as the nurses took her away from her mother in a straight jacket. What had she done?! What had she done to deserve this? Kate had decided that the minute she got out of this hospital, she would kill her mother and uncle. Both deserved to go to hell for what they had done to her. The door opened interrupting her thoughts, “Katie girl, it’s time for your treatment.” She looked at Carl, her personal nurse, and crossed her arms then told him, “I’m not going.” “Come on now. The treatment will help you Katie.” He said as he led her to the wheelchair and pushed her down on the seat. He wheeled her around and pushed her out of her white padded room. “That is what you say.” She answered in a dull tone. Kate looked up at the flickering fluorescent lights as Carl wheeled her toward the Electric Shock Treatment room. St. Luke’s was known for its electric shock treatments. This supposedly made the people they treated normal. Her palms became sweaty as they neared the dreaded room. She hated the treatments she received. They entered the room, the doctor and few nurses looked at her and prepared for a struggle. Kate decided she would give them one. Once Carl stopped she leapt from the chair and made for the doorway. He grabbed her round her waist and easily stopped her from leaving the room. Kate bit at his arm as he hefted her over to the table. “Now, now, Katie. Be a good girl.” Carl chastised her as they strapped her struggling body on the table.
Once strapped down she stopped struggling knowing that her treatment was inevitable. As the doctor readied her for her treatment she thought of her revenge on her mother and uncle. She would kill when she got out of here. She planned to murder her mother and uncle because of their crimes against her. Kate looked on as the doctor’s hand neared the switch and she thought before it was flipped, ‘I will get out. I will get out.’
