8/18/2006 - Ogham

Posted in Divination

Silvermelusine mentioned something in my post about Runes that I was intending to speak of here eventurally and since it was brought up I thought I would talk of it now. And that is what is known as the Ogham. I have mentioned that the Druids were an oral culture with no true written lanague and this is true but they did have what is called the Ogham and the Ogham they beleived was the lanaguage of the trees. Druids held a high regaurd for trees and saw them as sacred and magickal beings, and varrious different trees had different arrtriubtes arributed to them. Druids saw trees as having souls which could be communicated with.

The Ogham can be seen as somewhat simillar to runes and they are a tool used in Divination, and they are read in a way that is simillar to that of runes. The Ogham is represented by slashes or lines usually carved upon a piece of wood. Heree is what Ogham looks like

The sticks which the Ogham symbols are carved in are arranged in a spread or pattern like runes and cards, and then each of the symbols represents something and there meaning is read in relation to each other.

Thanks for posting about the Ogham. It is nice to see a Wiccan centered blog around here.
