Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), also called as the "hole", is a type of congenital heart disease where the wall inside the heart that divide its left and right sides had a partial closure. Because of this, a huge volume of blood flows through the right side of the heart which causes it to work too much and eventually enlarge. The larger the volume of blood flow, the higher the chance of getting pulmonary hypertension, one of ASD's major complications. Though a child suffering from ASD shows few or sometimes no symptoms at all, the hole continues to grow and leaving it untreated would lead to life-threatening complications. The only cure for this is an open-heart surgery.
Jerthrude Maree has been suffering the said defect for 6 years. She was diagnosed with ASD when she was just 2 years old, but due to financial difficulties the surgery was pushed back. When she had her recent check up on June 6, results showed that pulmonary hypertension is starting to build up due to a larger hole in her heart, measuring 2.8cm. The operation has to be done immediately according to her cardiologist or complications might set it that will lead to permanent damages.
