I get loads of spam. I guess my spam filter isn't configured very well. But this has to be the oddest spam email I've ever recieved. What the hell is it trying to sell me? I haven't a clue. If you know please tell. |

Well after Mr. C's tales of Paradise from sunny Thailand here's a different perspective. (taken from an article in The Land is Ours newsletter 23) Around 80 Muslim land rights campaigners were killed in October 2004 after being rounded up by the Thai army. Witnesses say a riot started when police fired live rounds into a crowd of 2000 demonstrators outside a police station in Takbai, southern Thailand. The dead were crushed and suffocated after being packed tightly into trucks and driven to Pattani province following 1300 arrests. Campaigners in Narathiwat province say they have legitimate frustrations due to economic deprivation, denial of land rights, freedom of religion and language, as well as the right to run their own schools. Human Rights Watch and other rights groups have been consistently reporting cases of torture, kidnapping and disproportionate force by Thai security forces. |

I've just put a new CPU fan in my machine coz the old one was knackered but encountered what seemed like a catch 22 problem. The new fan is slower than the old one which presents a problem for the BIOS. When the computer starts up the BIOS checks the CPU fan speed. If it's not fast enough the computer won't continue starting up, emits loads of irritating bleeps and then shuts down. Now because my nice new slow speed (hence quieter) fan runs slower the BIOS says fault and ...etc. So the obvious thing is to change the BIOS settings. But, here's the catch 22, you can't get to the BIOS settings until after the computer has OKe'd the fan speed. What to do? Well luckily for me there was an old fan lying around. It was far too small for my chipset but I bunged it on just to see if it could help get through the POST (Power On Self Test). To make sure my chip didn't overheat I pointed a room fan straight at it. It worked, the little fan ran at 5100rpm and I made it to the BIOS settings. Seems like you can't change the rpm speed the fan is supposed to run at with my BIOS. The only choice you have is to disable that part of the POST which I did. And now my new fan runs and here I am back online. Which just leaves one question. Anyone know where you can see the CPU temperature or fan speed from Win XP? |

I've been using Firefox for some time now but the more I learn about it the better it gets. Although overall it seemed much better than IE there were a couple of things that IE had that Firefox didn't. First there was true full screen mode where, on pressing F11, everything disappears, even the small bar at the top. This came became visible only when you moved your cursor to the top of the screen. Secondly was the ability to open open a web page in a text editor. This was easy in Opera. The preferences page allowed you to choose whatever editor you prefered which then opened with Ctrl + Spacebar. In IE you could at least edit the page in Notepad. Well both these problems have now been solved by using Firefox extentions. Extentions are available to customize all different aspects of Firefox, some of which are particularly great for Firefox users who build web pages. In fact with the extentions I use for Firefox now I can truthfully say no other browser comes close to Firefox for web development. I can now open web pages with View Source With which totally rocks. Not only can I now open a page in my text editor (NoteTab Pro) at the click of Ctrl +U, I can also choose several editors from a new item on the View menu. I also have the excellent Web Developer by Chris Pederick. This adds a great tool bar of very useful commands the most useful of which is the Outline command. This allows you to outline any element/s you want by putting a coloured border around them. Great for seeing how a site is designed or seeing where a problem with specific element is. Web Developer does loads of other stuff like validating your page (if connected to the web) for CSS or HTML, links, speed report etc. Adding your own CSS to a page, disabling stuff etc. Web Developer also has its own view source button and happily for me this doesn't open in NoteTab. Why? Because this opens with another great extention HTML Validator. This uses Tidy to instantly tell you of any errors or warnings in the page being viewed. If you want to see how someone elses web page is as well as its problems just hit the View Source button and away you go. Another useful extention is Aardvark. This, like web developer, helps you identify elements but by hovering the cursor over what you want - when its turned on. Sometimes its better than Web Developer for this so I use both. Also useful is Jeremy Gillick's Lorum Ipsum generator for quickly creating filler text from the Firefox menu, and Edit CSS which allows you to edit the CSS of any page from the sidebar. There are loads of other great extentions for Firefox and if you can't find what you need search the forums, as I did for View Source With..., or post a query and chance are.... |
