Well after Mr. C's tales of Paradise from sunny Thailand here's a different perspective. (taken from an article in The Land is Ours newsletter 23) Around 80 Muslim land rights campaigners were killed in October 2004 after being rounded up by the Thai army. Witnesses say a riot started when police fired live rounds into a crowd of 2000 demonstrators outside a police station in Takbai, southern Thailand. The dead were crushed and suffocated after being packed tightly into trucks and driven to Pattani province following 1300 arrests. Campaigners in Narathiwat province say they have legitimate frustrations due to economic deprivation, denial of land rights, freedom of religion and language, as well as the right to run their own schools. Human Rights Watch and other rights groups have been consistently reporting cases of torture, kidnapping and disproportionate force by Thai security forces. |

Kath> 100s of countries all around the world every day. It seems to have been
Kath> human nature since forever to fight over religious beliefs and for power
Kath> over land (often related, especially in resource poor areas).
Pro> I don't think its human nature. Most people don't behave that way.
Pro> Just an unfortunate few.
Kath> There was a bizzarre program on NZ TV last week about psychpaths in the workplace. For various reasons they were saying that those bullying types you get in the office environment are actually clinically psychopathic. They reckonned 1% or more of the male population are affected. This is just the extreme end of the scale.
I'm not saying it was the most rigorously conducted science, but it sure fits in with my experience of human beings. There seemed to be less of it in NZ which is one of the many pleasures of being here. However, (drug) gang warfare and murders, and teenage kidnapper/torturers and child abusers have all hit the news recently.
Matbe we should revert to the tactics of the NZ drug squad in the 60's which was to burn all the marijuana they found in huge bonfires, ensuring everyone in the vicinity (including aforementioned police officers) gets thoroughly happy!
